If driftwood clutters the Thames, or a fast tug tears up and down through the stately four-day regatta, Jackson and bf have an excellent chance in the double skulls. If the Thames is its usual serene self, they have only their plain gold medal Olympic experience to rely on. Jackson and Hungerford, Uni- versity of British Columbia stu- dents, met for the first time one day last year in Tokyo. WON FIRST OUTING They won their first outing, together, and their second) brought them the gold medal. | For the last few weeks, they have rowed together morning) and night in the dirty, debris- laden waters of Vancouver's) Burrard Inlet, dodging the drift- wood shaking off the seaweed, and wobbling violently in the wash of passing tugs. Friday night, they slipped quietly out of town two days) ahead of schedule, and flew to) England. Their rudderless shell, built) by George Pocock of Seattle,| preceded them by a week. Pocock believes a rudderless shell, steered by one of the oars- men slackening off for two strokes, can be three lengths faster over a 1'%-mile course than ruddered craft. SHELL WAS GIFT The shell was a $1,200 gift from Hungerford's father and grandfather. ' Their coach, Dave Gillander$, says fans contributed the $600 | to fly the shell to England. He said the national fitness council backed out on a prom- ise to contribute $2,600 for the Henley trip, and instead is pay- ing only half their fares and ho- tel bill. Gillanders has followed them in a powet boat through the| choppy Burrard inlet waters, dodging the deadheads and floating bottles, shouting in- structions and warning them with a loud hailer. Another constant watcher has been Jack Carver of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. 'It might kill the stewards at} Henley," said Carver after a re- cent workout, "but supposing needed to get the eight - oared and doubles en- tries and their shells to Eng- land for the annual Royal Hen- ley Regatta June 24.
