6 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, April 14, 1968 By Geo. H. Campbell SPORTS EDITOR verything From Soup To Nuts' : OLD STUFF? Well, maybe it has been said a couple of * tithes before, but this time there's no denying it -- Toronto > Leafs went down, but they certainly "'went down fighting'. This could mark the end of the NHL trail for more than just " @ couple of the Mapleos, but if ever a bunch of old men let a bunch of youngsters know they were in a hockey game, then Leafs did just that, last night, before they bowed out of the 1965 Stanley Cup race. They set a scoring record in the first * period last night, a new playoff mark, scoring four goals in the space of 99 seconds and when the splurge was over, Leafs » were leading 3-1. They scored two of them while they them- * selves were short-handed. However, as throughout this series, * Leafs failed to stop Montreal's power play and again the Canadiens clicked when Leafs had a man in the sin-bin. FIGHTING BACK from a 3-1 deficit, to tie the score, has to point up the fact that the Habs were deserving of their win. And it must have been a great thrill for "Gump" Wor- sley, to be one of the brightest of a galaxy of stars, in the elimination of the Leafs, right in the Gardens. Worsley and * Bower were stupendous throughout, both performed miracle saves at times, each of which had a direct bearing on the game. And the way both teams literally ':flew" in that over- time session has to be some of the fastest hockey seen this season. In the final analysis, Canadiens had that extra step and they eventually, by sustained all-out pressure and speed, were able to make it pay off. It was a terrific series and it is indeed unfortunate that now Montreal must go into the finals, without the services of their ace defense star, Jacques Laper- riere, who suffered a fractured leg, in last night's hectic action. SUPERIOR MAN-POWER and sustained pressure was the answer also, last night in Chicago, as Black Hawks blanked the Red Wings 4-0, to tie their series and force the seventh and deciding game, on Detroit ice, tomorrow night. Minus two of their regulars and with a couple more on the limp, Red Wings stayed with the desperate Black Hawks, outside of Wharram's goal early in the second stanza, until past the halfway mark in the third period. Bobby Hull, who appeared to be a tired player in the last 10 minutes of Sunday night's game, didn't get any of the four goals last night but the "Scooter Line' finally clicked and the mutterigs against Mikita were hushed, as he scored Chicago's third goal. Red Wings expect to have Barkley back on defence for the decid- ing game Thursday night and with Howe and Uliman leading the homesters while Bobby Hull and Mikita pace the Hawks, it should be a hum-dinger ! SPORTS SHORTS: -- Niagara Falls Flyers failed to sweep their series in four-straight, as Toronto Marlboros put on a great fighting display last night to stay alive, with a 2-1 victory, on Mike Corrigan's goal, late in the third period. Keon of Marlies and Sanders of Flyers got into a scrap as the game ended and fans surged on the ice but police and coaches finally restored order. They go again tomorrow night, in Niagara Falls... . RALPH TERRY, traded by Yan- kees to Cleveland last October, pitched the whole game, a four-hitter, for a 7-1 victory over the Angels yesterday. It was his first full game since last July. Al Kaline drove in five runs in Detroit's 11-4 win over Kansas City and Chicago White Sox beat Orioles 5-3... . AL McBEAN, top relief pitch- er in the National League last season, came into the game in the 9th inning last night and stopped Giants cold, to pre- serve a 5-2 win for the Pirates. Cincy Reds beat the Braves 8-3 and Card lost to the Cubs, 3-1... . JIM TRIMBLE is re- ported to have told Bernie Faloney to either show up to play, or sit out the season. Faloney now says he doesn't like ulti- matums -- and he'll sit out the season. Bet he doesn't?
