OTTAWA (CP)--Prime Minis- ter Pearson today confirmed --\reports that Canadian - made automobiles are being sold in a\the United States, but he said is he. had no details on whether the prices are below those be- ing charged Canadian car-buy- ers. He had been asked last week by T. C. Douglas ,leader of the Trade on Canadian manufacturers in- creasing their production. When the agreement was signed in January, Trade Min- ister Sharp said he hoped car prices would be the same in both countries within five to 10 years. WOULD HIT JOBS Mr. Pearson told the Com- mons today that Canadian car prices could be lowered simply by removing all tariffs, but that Canadian production and employment would run the risk of being lowered, too. He said some time must be allowed for the agreement to achieve its objective. Mr. Douglas said that Chrys- ler Corporation plans to sell 80,000 Canadian-made cars in the U.S., and he asked whether the government would investi- gate to see whether U.S. buy- ers are being charged less than cost or whether Canadians are paying "a great deal more." The prime minister said it would be examined carefully. Reid Scott (NDP -- Toronto Danforth) asked that the tariff agreement be referred to a spe- cial parliamentary committee where union representatives and economists, among others, could give their views on the |scheme. He said this should be done in view of the govern- ment's plans to extend the ar- rangement to other industries. Mr. Pearson said he has never said the arrangement would be extended to other in- dustries. District Residents Help THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, April 14,1965 7 In Farm Accident Survey Every day in the Province of Ontario, a member of a farm family will be killed, be in- jured or suffer loss through a farm accident, One member of every fourth farm family will be an accident victim this year -- if accidents on the farm and in the farm house continue at their present rate. What can be done to prevent this? The Ontario Government has launched a farm accident sur- vey which will be conducted from April 1, 1965, to March 31, 1966, to try and stop or reduce' these accidents. Ontario County is included in this program. This farm accident survey in Ontario county is being organ- ized by the Ontario Depart- ment of Agriculture with the County Farm Safety Council. The main causes of farm accidents are: improper use of farm machinery; working when hampered by fatigue; trying to speed up the working program beyond a sensible rate ignoring manufacturer's directions; and lack of respect for high speed machinery. Just as improved farming practices are the result of scien- tific research applied on actual farming, it is hoped a sound farm safety program will re- sult from research on actual farm accidents. In all townships of the Coun- ty, accident reporters have been selected for small well defined areas, such as a school section.
