Dear' Dr. Molner: The blood vessels on the top of my nose are clearly. visible and thus to a degree disfiguring. I have heard that in time more of them will show, and the size and shape of the nose will be af- fected. Is this true? I am a man of 42, The rest of my face is pink but without visible blood vessels--J. O. N. Excessive .exposure to sun and wind can cause this. (Far more rarely, so can X-rays or other sources of radiation.) A condition called rosacea (a tendency of the skin to flush easily) is another cause, Or these prominent blood vessels can occur in individuals with an unstable vasomotor nervous sys- tem--that is, the involuntary! Unsightly Nose Needs Treatment portion of the nervous system which controls the tone of the capillaries, or very small blood vessels close to the skin surface. The appearance of these ves- sels is often associated with ex- cessive use of alcohol. What is not so well known is that ex- cessive tea or coffee can have the same consequence at times. I strongly doubt that you need fear any deformity of the nose, but I suggest that you see a skin specialist for specific treat-]) ment, Without treatment, it is en- tirely probable that the condi- tion will become more promi- nent. SOUTH : @o74 @AKI5 @AaKos $82 The bidding: Opening lead--seven of clubs, It takes no great amount of skill to make a contract that is destined to make regardless of how the opponents' cards are divided. The real test comes when de- clarer is faced with a situation where he seems fated to go down because the opposing cards are badly stacked against him. Making a contract under these conditions is what really tests a declarer's skill. Let's say that South ruffs the club lead, plays a heart to the ace. cashes the ace of dia- monds, ruffs a club, and then takes a diamond finesse, West wins the diamond with the queen and shifts to the queen of spades, It does not matter what declarer does now; he goes down, losing three spade tricks and a diamond. South is doubly unlucky to find West with the queen of diamonds and East with the ace of spades, and has some right to squawk about his misfortune. However, South can practical- ly assure the contract if he is clever enough to make a very unusual play. While it is true that the odds of making the hand by finding one of the two key cards well placed are 3 to 1 in his favor, South can increase these odds to practically 100 per cent by discarding a' dia- mond from dummy on the open- ing lead. This extraordinary play has just about everything to recom- mend it. East wins, but can make no damaging return. Let's say he plays back a diamond. South takes it with the ace, draws a round of trump, ruffs a club, plays a diamond to the king, and continues with the nine of diamonds. If West follows low, South dis- cards a spade from dummy, ab- solutely unconcerned whether East wins the trick or not. He must make the contract in either case. If West covers the nine with the queen,. declarer ruffs and later discards a spade from dummy on the eight of diamonds thus guaranteeing himself ten tricks. Brewers Will Shun Students TORONTO (CP) -- All brew- eries selling in Ontario have agreed not to solicit business in university residences and fra- ternity houses, G. Harry 'Shep- pard, chief commissioner of the Liquor Control Board of On- tario, said today. Mr. Sheppard said he made the request of the breweries Jan. 29, a week after the death of Thomas Dasovich, 26, in a three-car crash following a beer-drinking contest at a fra- ternity house of students at- tending Ryerson Polytechnical Institute here. Dear Dr. Molner: When I was younger it was stylish to wear shoes without sock or stockings. As a result the shoes rubbed my heels and I now have large, protruding 'calluses. They are not painful, but insightly. Can I get rid of them? Is it possible that the bone has become en- larged with calcium deposits?-- MISS M.L. A callus is a thickening of the} skin. If your shoes still rub, or ex- ert any pressure, at the same spots you can't expect the cal- luses to disappear. They won't. Lotions to soften the skin may help. You can try gentle, re- peated rubbing with pumice to wear away the thickened skin. Otherwise, if this is really im- portant, see a podiatrist (foot specialist).
