Campbell SPORTS EDITOR 'Everything From Soup To Nuts' THE ANNUAL R. S. McLaughlin Bonspiel, Oshawa Curl- ing Club's traditional 3-day classic, got under way yesterday. Once again they had a full entry of 48 rinks and once again, the unusual was predominant. Last year's premier trophy winner, Bob Laurie's Unionville rink, was defeated in the second round, by a rink of fellow clubmates, skipped by Ray Grant. Six Oshawa rinks were entered in the event and not wne survived the second round. Father Jack Pereyma's rink lost out in their setond round game and so did Dr. John Brock's rink and the one skipped by veteran Al Parkhill. Three Oshawa rinks highly favored this year to take it all, those skipped by Bob Walker, Paul Michael and Clair Peacock, all were victims of upset decisions in their first round, but all three came roaring back in their second round play with clean- cut wins. Indications, even at this early date, are that the Fittings Trophy final will be an all-Oshawa affair, with these strong contenders still in the running. x x x x YESTERDAY'S action was the perfect bonspiel touch, with keen competition but just two games for each team and in between, every out-of-town rink was royally entertained, members of the host club acting as hosts. Following their second games last night, all the competitors enjoyed Dick Lee's "Chinese Lunch" -- a culinary treat that made a big hit with everybody. Today's play will spell elimination for about half of the entries. There are five trophy competitions in the Oshawa Curling Club's annual 3-day bonspiel, and the way it works out, you have to win your fourth game -- or go home. This gives plenty of scope for all the 48 rinks entered and assures them of two full days of competition. However every rink must win their fourth game today, regardless of which of the five events they are in, in order to survive. Already, it is assured that a new rink of winners will claim The R. S. MeLaughlin Trophy but after that, there will be a keen scrap for the other four available trophies, with Oshawa rinks concentrating mainly in the secondary (Fittings Trophy) event and the third event, for The Oshawa Times Trophy. A ee ass BRIGHT BITS:--This should be interesting ! Ted Lindsay is being called up on NHL Fresident Clarence Campbell's carpet -- and Ted Lindsay really doesn't care. It could be that the fiery left-winger just might set up a pattern that could overthrow the NHL dictatorship that has existed in re- cent years . Certainly, President Clarence Campbell isn't going to "sound off" too harsh on this one -- he's dealing with a guy who can not only afford the fine, but really doesn't care and President Campbell has his own future to protect. . «+. TORONTO LEAFS, shot full of holes with injuries and ailments, are looking around fo bring up recruits and are suddenly finding that their farm-hands are not exactly jump- ing at the chance to join the Mapleos, . . . NIAGARA FALLS Figers can move into a tie for first place in the OHA Junior "A" League, if they can beat the Generals here in Oshawa tonight -- but we doubt if that will happen!
