For the last four seasons France has topped the five-na- tion international championship table. The four United Kingdom countries haven't had a look in, apart from 1960 when England shared the title. What makes the Gallic victor- ies so galling for British fans is the champion's comparative in- fancy in the game. Until 1958 the Frenchmen brought nothing but an amusing continental fla- vor to the game. Now with a style that keeps the ball moving swiftly they have swept the board. "The Wa- terloo of English rugby,'? was the headline in a Paris newspa- per after England was trounced at Colombes Stadium last Feb- ruary. Experts say the French rise to power began in the nurseries of the sunny southwest. Here young athletes mingle rugby tactics with basketball to de- velop better handling. Long-established running 'pat- terns have been set aside. Play- ers are taught to improvise and create scoring chances in mid- Old Country Rugby Has Distinct French Flavor field as well as traditional flank movements. Yet despite the concentration on youth the French national team is made up almost en- tirely of veteran players. ROCK SCARES THEM The daddy of the team is 37- year-old Alfred Roques, known as The Rock. With Jean-Pierre Saux and Amedee Domenech, one of four restaurateurs in the team, he makes up the Trico- lor's terrible trio. When the massive Roques and his equally bull-like cohorts go on the rampage even lion- hearted Scotsmen, weaned on weak point has been an inabil- ity to shine under sticky condi- tions. But British teams have been equally ineffective on hard scrimmages and embrocation, Apart from age, their one grounds where French mastery of the lively all has been prominent. This season the veterans showed some signs of wear. In a pre-season tour of New Zea- land they were completely out- classed, losing one match by a crushing 30-3. Yet they still hung on to the international championship, The experts say next season could spell th e end of the French reign. The U.K. teams are just beginning to build up dangerous-looking packs. But from the rugby backwa- ters of Warsaw, Bucharest and Rome come tales of new con- tinental challenges in the mak- ing.
