The skies cleared but the wind became stronger. Before noon, 214 cyclists had courageously mounted their bikes and chal- lenged 52 unknown miles. Leo Achtereekte completed' the course in less than 3 hours, Mrs. G. Millaire in just under 9 hours. Paul Labelle carried his broken arm in a full-length cast around the whole course. These are only a few of the many stories of sore behinds, broken bicycles, food shortages, and worn-out bodies of the many bikers who participated. However, every- one claimed to have had a very enjoyable day. The two bicycles were won by Robert Sheldrick and Nynetha Portal-Foster. Robert won the lucky draw, and Nynetha raised the most money, $283.00. Congratulations Robert and Nynetha. | must apologize for certain inconveniences which happened on the route. We will see to it that this does not happen next year. To date we do not have a final total, but we expect it will be well over $5,000.00. The sponsors' totals will be in the mail shortly. A special word of gratitude to the Boy Scouts whos, under Scoutmaster Dick Sherwood, did an excellent job with road signs. We can use the same signs in future years. Also, Ottawa East Lions Club con- tributed over $250.00 by each member sponsoring one biker and the club matching the total. Russell will not forget your kindness, Ottawa East! As chairman, | would like to thank the members of this year's committee for making my job simple. Thank you gentlemen, Gordon Walker, Pete Sorby, Gordon Saunders, and Lorne Honey. You did an excellent job. Thank you fellow members of the Lions Club, bikers, and sponsors for making the 1977 bike-a-thon the most successful to date in Russell. Let's make it bigger and better in 1978.
