Russell Review June 15, 1977 saw Russell Bantams defeat Vernon in Russell. 1st inning saw no runs for either team. 2nd inning, no score for Vernon while G. McLaren calked up one for the home team. 3rd inning Vernon managed 3 men on base but still did not manage a run. J. Cochrane, T. McLaren, G. McLaren added runs for Russell. Vernon were held scoreless in Russell Pee Wee Softball Team won again June 16th against Vernon with a score of 12-6. So far this season they've played 6 league Minor Ball the 4th and 5th while Russell had runs by F. Bols, G. McLaren, J. Herweyer, S. Cherry, B. Paw- chuk, F. Bols, P. Cooper. 6th inning saw Vernon finally get on the score board with a run by J. Grubb, Russell failed to score in the 6th. 7th inning saw Vernon add another run by B. Wammes, while G. McLaren got the only run for the home team. Final score, 12-2. June 22, 1977 Russell vs. Prescott Rd. at Prescott Rd. 1st inning no scoring, 2nd_ inning saw J. Herweyer get the home team on the score board while Russell's pitcher J. Cochrane managed to hold the opposition scoreless. 3rd inning saw T. Harrison, S. Houlihan, J. Cochrane, G. McLaren, J. Herweyer had a home run for Russell, while D. Peterson, S. Blanchfield, J. Duncan, R. Salmon and D. Chisolm put Prescott Rd. on the score sheet. 4th inning saw Russell have runs by T. Harrison, J. Cochrane, G. McLaren, while the opposition added 2 more by S. Blanchfield and J. Duncan. 5th inning saw Russell and 7 runs" while Prescott Rd. were held score- less. 6th inning, Russell no runs while B. Potvin added one for the opposition. 7th inning was scoreless for both teams. Final score, Russell 16, Prescott Rd. 8. First the National Capital Region long weekend activity camp, Alert Il which was held at Christie Lake, Ont. and accommodated over 900 boys in five camps spread over an area of three or four square miles and included Christie Lake, O'Brien's Lake and Farren's Lake. All activities were geared to challenge the age level of the boys who had been entered as teams in similar age groupings. The two Russell teams, Juniors, headed by Jeff Butler and the Seniors, by Jim Hill, came third and fourth respectively in the Rideau Area standings. The River Cleanup. This was the first of our community service projects for 1977 and the troop scoured the river banks within the village limits and retrieved ten large garbage bags full of broken glass, tin cans and sundry rubbish. | regret to note that much of what we picked up was obviously left at fishing sites by local "Sportsmen" out for the customary spring barbotte. Come on guys, you took all that beer out there full, couldn't you at least bring the empty bottles home? Our second community ser- vice project this year was the annual cleaning of the commun- ity swimming pool. Together with the Fire Department and Pool staff, the senior boys supplied the muscle power to scrub down the pool and remove hundreds of gallons of gunk from the pool bottom. Soon we shall all enjoy the fruits of our labours. Canadian Jamboree (CJ'77) is to be held at Cabot Park, P.E.1. from July 1 to the Qth. Nine boys will attend with the Russell Troop. They are: Jim Hill, Leader; Rodney Campbell, Cook; John Mackenzie, Jeff Butler, Richard Mackenzie, Chris Coates, and Curt Coates, Calgary, Alberta; Doug and Steve Chisholm, Osgoode, Ontario. We travel by bus from Ottawa on the 30th of June with a stopover in Moncton, N.B. We intend to do and see as much as we. can while there and shall be equipped with new lightweight tents and coleman _ stoves purchased with funds raised by the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 372, Russell. Thanks Legionaires for your help. If the weather is kind and if Rodney Campbell lives up to. our expectations as Cook, we should have a terrific time. Scouting will cease for the summer on June 21 and will resume September 12th with registration of all interested boys 11 to 14 years old. 10 year olds, big for their age, will be considered if they are interest- ed.
