I a ------ r SD ASS ---- ST TTT est TTR ERR Baagivy wih TY 8 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, February 8, 2000 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Clive calls it quits after 25 years with the region By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Clive Boyd is calling it a career after spending the last 25 years with Durham Region's works department. A skilled maintenance man with the water and sewers department, Mr. Boyd eased into retirement Jan. 28, say- ing goodbye to the friends and colleagues he's met dur- ing his tenure with the region. His career began in 1972, when he landed a job with the Village of Port Perry's works department. COUNTY OF VICTORIA IMPORTANT REMINDER ] TO RESIDENTS PLACEMENT OF RECYCLING BOXES AND GARBAGE CONTAINERS Residents are reminded to place garbage bags/containers and recycling boxes at the end of your driveway rather than out on the shoulder of the road, in order to avoid the path of the snow plow and wing. This concen applies to all Municipal Roads, as well as County Roads. For more information, please Contact the Waste Management Department, County of Victoria at (705) 324-9450 ext. 271 or 283 A year after the region amalgamated in 1974, Mr. Boyd and two others from Port Perry joined the region's works department, working out of the county buildings until a new yard was opened in the early 1980s at the intersec- tion of Regional Rds. 21 and 23, near Utica. "I've seen a lot of changes here in Port Perry and across Durham Region since | first started in 1972," said Mr. Boyd. "There have been a lot of upgrades over the past 28 years. Port Perry had two wells then, the pipes are a lot bigger, and there were only 72 fire hydrants; now there's more than 290. And that new water tower, it's quite a thing at 470,000 gallons." Mr. Boyd began in 1972 as a general labourer, and joined the region staff as a skilled maintenance man with the Water and Sewage department. "We took care of everything, from plugged sewers to broken water mains," he said, noting that he looked after most of north Durham. "Durham Region provides a very good service to its customers." Now, at the age of 62, Mr. Boyd has decided to call it a career and spend more time with his family ( wife Pat and two children), his model train hobby, and the Scugog Fire Department. "I took early retirement because it was at the point where | didn't want to be tied down every day. | had other things | wanted to do," he said. "Doing that job is a young man's job anymore. Getting up at 2 or 3 in the morning to go out and fix a water main in minus 30 weather... that's a young man's job, and I'm not going to miss it at all." He will, however, continue to serve as a volunteer with the Scugog Fire Department. "I enjoy it, | really do," said the 35-year veteran, who is now a captain. "This is something | can do for the com- munity which has given so much to me over the years. It's my way of giving something back." Prior to beginning his career with the Village of Port Perry, Mr. Boyd was employed at the Port Perry Star for more than 11 years. A grandson of former Star publisher Samuel Farmer, Mr. Boyd helped his family run the paper after the Second World War. Retirement from the region means Clive Boyd will have more time to devote to his model railroad, and to the Scugog Fire Department. JACK FROST NIPPING AT YOUR TAILPIPE?
