Nevertheless, much of a ducks food consists of seeds of grains, grasses, sedges and aquatic plants that must be ground up before they can be digested. Ducks (and many other birds) take in small stones or "grit" which remain in their gizzard (stomach). The strong muscular action of the gizzard and the abrasive effects of the grit, grinds up the food the duck has eaten.
