There have been many notable hockey stars who visited the old arena. Jan Franssen, former Port Perry Minor Hockey Association president, told of the nigh Bobby Orr came up from the Oshawa Generals to drop the puck in a 1964 ceremony. Early in the 1960's Maurice "Rocket" Richard came here after the PPMHA contacted the Montreal Canadien organi- zation. He refereed a minor game. The arena has also played host to many homegrown stars. David Porter, an excellent figure skater, got his start here. Two other skaters, Stevens and Forder made it to the Olympics after starting out with the club at the old arena. In fact, one of the reasons that the rink was constructed was because the building the Oshawa club was using burned down. GREAT TEAMS There were a few great teams and a couple of good hockey players to come out of Port Perry, thanks mainly to the Water Street building. Minor Hockey moved in at the beginning of the 1955-56 season when the PPMHA became affiliated with the OMHA. The late Joe Fowler was one of the first to use the old arena when he took his 11-12 year olds in on Saturday mornings. It wasn't long before this that Turk Broda, one of the greatest Toronto Maple Leaf goaltenders of all time, came to Port Perry to tutor the young puck stoppers on Saturday morn- ings. He was here for one winter. "I think he had a good time when he was in Port Perry," said Dr. MacMaster. Port Perry arena was the site of the home games for the juvenile team during the years 1953-55. They were Port's first all-Ontario championship squad. That team was coached by Don Cochrane, who became a lifetime member of the PPMHA a few years back. The next big team in Port Perry was the Junior B Port Perry Flyers. They were managed by a well rounded hockey man named Wren Blair. Blair later became the manager of the Oshawa Generals. Following that he went on to coach and manage the NHL expansion Minnesota North Stars. Reg Moorehead trained that team which went to the OHA finals. Players such as Tom O'Connor, Ken Fisher, and Ed Romenuck laced on I } antes emories of 29 the blades with them. BIG RED MACHINE The early 1970's were the heyday of the 'Big Red Machine" in Port Perry and that unit too played in the Community Memorial Rec- reation Centre. "I would call that one of the best teams Port Perry ever iced. Once we got out of our own zone no one could touch us," said Mr. Franssen. This was a midget team with the likes of Glen Geer, Leo McLaughlin and Brent Heard. In 1975-76 they won the Midget C title for Ontario by beating Dresden 12-1 in the final game. A year later PPMHA shifted its operations to the Scugog Arena. So the old arena on Water Street has seen a lot in 29 years. From Teeder Kenn- edy afid Sid Smith on opening night{\to Turk Broda and Bobby Orr in later years. A lot of good names from Port Perry played there. Tom Olsen, rry Elson, Barry Heard, and George Burnett slapped puckes around the building. But those days are memor- les now. Last October the Scugog Township Council condemned the arena follow- ing consultants' reports that it was unsafe because of rot in some of the support beams. A wrecking crew has PORT PERRY STAR -- Wednesday, July 23, 1980 -- 17 ears linger moved in and the building filled with so many good memories will be razed by August 20. Mr. Franssen spoke for a lot of townsmen when he said, "The old rink has done the Port Perry people well." Scugog beaten 8-1 by Whitby in soccer action 'by Barry Page The Port Perry Printers had their first defeat last week losing 8-1 to a Whitby team. Our boys didn't play very well on offence, that is running with the play and supporting it. Their defence was also lacking in that there was no system and support 2 0X » Work began last week to tear down the Port Perry Arena, some 29 years after it was officially opened. The arena ceased operation when it became too costly to repair last fall. Tn defence of the team's showing, there were five of the starting players attend- ing this week's soccer school. These players who were playing soccer from 9:00 to 4:00 every day were completely drained by the contract and are to have removed the building from the Water Street site by August 20, 1980. Thursday's game and were down physically and mental- ly. The team had only eleven players for the game which meant that there were no reserves. After half time the team regrouped and held the Whitby team to one goal and scored one of their own. This goal came from a fine corner kick by Paul Bateman to Rob Page who made an excellent header into the top corner of the net. Our team has a bye this week so our next game will be a home game on July 24, 6:30 p.m. at the Port Perry High School field. Ball hockey tournament The Port Perry Ball Hockey League is hosting its second annual tournament on Saturday, July 26 starting at 8:00 a.m. There will be eight teams ~ competing, including the four from the Port Perry league, the Aztecs, the Flames, Trojans and last year's winning Packers.
