LU, AL by Danny Millar Errors were the password of the game and the Malmont Farms midgets made seven of them en route to an embarassing 15-3 loss at the hands of the Mother's Pizza juveniles in a battle of Port Perry softball teams on Tuesday, July 15. None of the first four runs by the Juveniles was earned by pitcher Todd Wilbur. His fielders made three miscues in the first inning that gave away three runs. Wilbur started on shaky ground, issuing a base on four balls to leadoff hitter Greg Fedyk. Fedyk is a sparkplug to the juvenile offence as a first batter. He gets on base a lot and is a threat to steal anytime. The midgets put a prevent-steal defence on him with short- stop Kevin Harris standing right on-the second base bag before Wilbur released the pitch. Fedyk still managed to swipe sdeond when catcher Bill. Wanamaker made a high throw. He scored when second sackey' Phil Robinson fumbled 'a routine grounder off the bat of Raymond Gibson. Pete Christie made a low throw to first when George Burnett bunted and the runners ended up on the corners. Gibson scored on a close play at the plate when third baseman ~ Robert Franssen dropped the ball, retrieved it, and threw too low for Wanamaker to make the tag. Wanamaker is usually one of the team's coaches but two regular backstops, Dave Davis and Clay Lovering have injuries. Franssen has also played at that position. Burnett got the last run of the first frame when Tim Thompson hit a long sacri- fice fly to left field. HITTING ATTACK The juveniles had a strong hitting attack all game. The only time they were thwar- ted was over the last three innings when Mark Jeffrey came in and shut the door on them. Still, they managed 14 hits off Wilbur and replace- ment Scott Sandison. The midgets got half that total off Thompson. It was another steady outing for Thompson as he fanned five and walked only three. He was never in trouble, giving up the runs one at a time. The midgets got one run back in the home half of the first when Christie hit a one out single to right field and scored after Franssen pounded a double to the fence. The juveniles knocked Wilbur out of the box in the second after he was tagged for three runs. Mark Brawn singled and Rick Wallace doubled to put two runners into scoring position. Brawn scored when Fedyk bunted and Franssen dropped another throw from Wana- maker. Wallace preceeded Fedyk, who scored when Gibson singled up the middle. Sandison came on just in time to see Thompson belt a long drive to centerfield that HWY. 7A - NESTLETON presents CARTWRIGHT MINOR SOFTBALL STANDINGS: JUNIOR DIVISON as of JULY 15th, 1980: Thompson's Village Market DonFrew &SonslLtd. ....... Thompson scored on the same play when the throw got by third base. The midgets loaded the bases in the third and got one run out of it as John Butler slid into home when Thomp- son uncorked a wild pitch. An inning which typified the midgets misfortunes was the seventh when they had two baserunners called out at home. Shortstop Dave Dickson made a smart play to get his brother Brian who got hung up around third. Dave threw to Carl Durward for the out. Sandison tried to come in from third base on a passed ball, but was out when Durward threw to infielder Leon Slute covering home. Juveniles pound midgets 15-31 in local softball rivalry Jeffrey was the one bright spot for the midgets. He relieved Sandison just after Wallace hit a two run shot to the centerfield wall and blanked the juveniles, most of them ex-teammates from last year, on no hits. He struck out three in the pro- cess. The home town rivals have now split a pair of league games but the younger team still holds the upper hand after winning a pre-season set. Unless either team makes the playoffs the two squads have met for the last time this year. Next Tuesday, July 22, the midgets 'are home to Pon- derosa. On Wednesday, July 23, the Juveniles take on OMS at Alexandra Park in 'Oshawa. Mark Jeffrey sharp as Port Perry splits with Lindsay Midgets by Danny Millar Port Perry Malmont Farms midgets took a 3-1 win in the nightcap and it allowed them to gain a split in their doubleheader with Lindsay at home on Sunday, July 20. The exhibition games were delayed by rain for a half an hour after they had previous- ly been set back 60 minutes because the Fowler Park diamond was not yet suitable for play. Right hander Mark Jeffrey tossed a splendid game in winning the second match. He gave up just six hits and struck out six. He also scored the insurance run himself in the fifth inning after he walked, stole second, and Todd Wilbur hit a double. Port Perry got the other two runs in the third when Scott Sandison led off with a triple that reached the centerfield fence and scored when John Butler hit to right field. Butler scored on the same play when the ball escaped the grasp of the outfielder. Port Perry had their opponents on the ropes early, when they loaded the bases with none out in the second inning. But Keith Trembley lined out to the shortstop, Todd Blayone struck out, and Phil Robinson hit a ground out, enabling Lind- say to walk in unscathed. Lindsay got their run in the third when Formica drove a line shot off Jeffrey's glove with Patterson o on third base. Robinson was chased off the rubber in the middle of the sixth frame after he had given up a-run on two sing- les. Sandison came on in relief and did not allow a earned run for his ef outing. Lindsay its second run wh catcher Dave Davis let a'ball get past him with a runner on third. Port took the lead early in the game when Lindsay gave up a bases loaded walk in the second inning. They manag- ed to tie it up an inning later, though. In the fourth, Lindsay used a squeeze bunt and a long fly ball to left field, over Butler's head, to score their three runs. Port Perry got its final run in the sixth when Jeffrey singled and scored when Davis knocked a long fly into centerfield. The same two teams go at it again next Sunday, July 27 in Lindsay in another double- header.
