Riding around town, one can notice here and there very nice lawns, without dandelions, and one would think they' belong to wine makers, - but not so - they belong to people who learned the art of destroying then. War with dandelions can be won, end many residents have results to back up that statement. The battle does not re- quire moh time and money, and June is a ripe time to start as dandelions are in sucoulent growing condition. Several produsts are available for control of dandelions and other weeds in lawns. Used as directed, they will kill meny broad leaved weeds without harming the lawn grasses. The' best known chemical is 2,4-D (aichlorophenoxy acetic acid) but several other growth-regulating chemicals such as MECOPROP and silver are useful. 'The growth-regulating chemicals not only kill the leaves and stems, but are absorbed, and move to all parts of the plant including the roots. All parts of weed are killed and regeneration is prevented. Due to lerge number of different formulations of 2,4-D etc., which are on the market, it is impossible to recommend the emount of product to use.~ The basic rate for control of lawn weeds with 2,4-D or MECOPROP is 16 ounces per acre, of the active part of the preperation, or approximately one-third ounse active per 1000 square feet. The directions on the label are based on this rate. When applying the above mentioned chemicals, care must be taken as wind-blown spray or fumes will injure or kill many garden plants and ornamentals - therefore spraying should be done only when there is little or no wind. Temperatures of from 70 -. 80 degrees F are the best for spraying with 2,4-D. At cooler temperatures, re- sults are obtined mich more slowly, and spraying at higher temperatures may injure the grass. It is desirable to make the application at least four hours before rainfall so that the chemical may be absorbed by foliage. For the control of}. most lewn weeds one spraying is-usually enough, but subse- quent spot applications may be necessary. 2,4-D will not control chickweed and MECOPROP solution must be used to com- bat it.
