Peter & Jennifer info@watsoninvestments.com (905) 842 -2100 Not a remedy for conges- tion, but rather a part of a longer-term strategy. That's how Oakville re- gional councillor Sean O'Meara described the Wyecroft Road and Bridge Extension "It's Metrolinx's 30-year strategy as well to have this connector corridor to even- tually bring some bus rapid transit," O'Meara said at an Oct. 27 gathering about the $60-million project. Bus rapid transit is a form of high order transit, where buses are given their own segregated corridor that regular car traffic can- not enter. High order transit, sometimes called rapid transit, is any form of tran- sit that is completely segre- gated from car traffic. Sub- ways are one example. Bus rapid transit is "al- ways in the cards. The question is where," asked O'Meara. "And we do have to work very closely with Metrolinx on this, because the connectors in the hubs that we have are focused around GO stations." Wyecroft Road east of Burloak Drive ends sud- denly about 350 metres west of MacPherson Road. Wyecroft starts up again at Bronte Road just over a ki- lometre away. Currently, the lands of Suncor's Bron- te Distribution Terminal and Bronte Creek cut off the two ends of Wyecroft. The road extension and bridge will join the two ends of the road, giving drivers more options for east-west routes. Halton Region hopes the new piece of infrastructure will alle- viate congestion and allow better access between Oak- ville and Burlington. On the eastern side of Bronte Creek is Bronte GO station, the area around which is slated for intensifi- cation into an "urban pe- destrian-oriented place" with housing, office and green spaces. "What we want to do is move the traffic out of the established residential neighbourhoods and move it up to the industrial em- ployment areas. Metrolinx saw it as an advantage be- cause it connects along the GO lines," said O'Meara. "This is all about mak- ing connections between Oakville and Burlington," said Andrew Farr, commis- sioner of public works for Halton Region. "It's going to be commuters getting to ei- ther one of the GO train sta- tions as this area develops." Regional staff say that the timeline for the project is currently a "moving tar- get," but they hope that con- struction will start in the fall of 2022. "We anticipate that this work will continue until the end of 2025," said Director of Engineering and Construction Marek Braczek. "We're about 75-per-cent design complete. And this is where we're now engag- ing Suncor and looking at not expropriating, but pur- chasing, those lands," Brac- zek added. WYECROFT ROAD EXTENSION 'LONGER TERM STRATEGY' Coun.
