By participating in Blue Box, Green Cart, YardWaste, Reuse andHousehold HazardousWaste programs, as well as diversion programs at the HaltonWasteManagement Site (HWMS), Halton residents continue tomaintain a high residential waste diversion rate. In 2020, 59 per cent of residential wastewas diverted from the landfill. Also, through our shared commitment, we have helped to extend the lifespan of the landfill from 2012 to between 2044 and 2048--over 30 years longer than expected. This has saved taxpayers more than $15million by deferring the costs of building a new site. Advocacy for ExtendedProducer Responsibility under theWasteFreeOntarioAct In collaborationwith our neighbouringmunicipalities, Halton Region has advocated to the Provincial government resulting in legislation that has enabled increased support from industry for the proper recycling and disposal ofmaterial through the following programs: • Blue Box ProgramPlan • Municipal Hazardous & SpecialWaste (makethedrop.ca, productcare.org) • UsedTires (rpra.ca/tires) • Waste Electronics & Electrical Equipment (recyclemyelectronics.ca) Halton SolidWasteManagement Advisory Committee The Committeewas established as a Condition of Approval for the HaltonWasteManagement Site (HWMS)when it opened in 1992. The Committee is comprised ofmembers fromBurlington, HaltonHills, Milton andOakville. The Committee advises Halton Regional Council regarding programs and strategies to promote the 3Rs--reduce, reuse, recycle--encourage community recycling andminimize the amount of waste going to the landfill. In 2020, the primary focuswas to update Committeemembers about Halton Regionwastemanagement programs, the changes to programs and status of Extended Producer Responsibility programs under theWaste FreeOntarioAct, the newOrganics Processing contract and accommodations and impacts due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
