Immediate hourly roles available at amazon.ca/apply START DELIVERING SMILES Halton police are investigat- ing after a man was beaten and possibly almost robbed of his car in Oakville on Thursday, Oct. 15. At around 10:20 p.m., the vic- tim was in a parking lot in the Pil- grims Way and Pineway Court area and was speaking on his phone outside his vehicle when he was attacked from behind by a group of male suspects, police said. The victim was reportedly kicked and punched and fell to the ground. Police said the attackers de- manded the man's car keys and then tried to get into his vehicle. Before they were able to ac- cess the car, the group got on their bikes and fled the area. It is unclear why the suspects suddenly left, but police said one possibility is the arrival of a wit- ness. The victim suffered non-life- threatening injuries during the attack and was transported to hospital for treatment. No reliable description of the suspects is available at this time. It is unclear how many sus- pects were involved in this at- tack, but police say there may have been four. Nothing other that the vic- tim's car keys was stolen. Anyone who witnessed this incident or has any information about it is asked to contact Hal- ton police at 905-825-4747 ext. 2216 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- TIPS (8477). MAN BEATEN DURING ROBBERY DAVID LEA dlea@metroland.com Police are looking for at least four people after a man was beaten during an Oakville robbery. Graham Paine/Torstar CRIME Halton police are reminding residents not to give children discarded cellphones as toys af- ter a child used such a phone to call 911, sending officers on a lengthy wild goose chase. Const. Ryan Anderson said that recent call resulted in 911 operators keeping the young child on the phone for 90 min- utes while officers attempted to locate the child to verify their safety. Police ended up knocking on more than 50 doors before they found the child and discovered they had been playing with an old cellphone. "It was determined that the same child had also called 911 from the same phone the previ- ous night, again tying up lines and utilizing unnecessary re- sources," said Anderson. Anderson noted a cellphone that is no longer connected to a service provider can still make outgoing emergency calls to 911. "This is a safety feature that is well intended and can save lives; however, it can also ex- haust emergency service re- sources when old phones are put into the wrong hands," said Anderson. "The Halton Regional Police Service 911 call centre receives hundreds of calls each year from phones given to young children as toys." These calls tie up both 911 op- erators and responding police officers and can even result in the fire department and EMS being dispatched, said Ander- son. He noted that if a 911 operator is unable to confirm the call was made in error or by a child play- ing with a phone, the police can- not assume there is nothing wrong and must be dispatched. "As much as we love talking to our youngest citizens, cellu- lar phones (new or old) are not toys," said Anderson. "These calls could have seri- ous consequences for those who truly require assistance." OLD CELLPHONES ARE NOT TOYS: POLICE Halton police say old cell phones are not appropriate toys for young children as they can still call 911 even if not connected to a cell provider.
