To ask residents to wear a mask for a few more weeks, to ensure the safe reopening of businesses and the health of residents, is a very "minor interven- tion," said Coun. Sean O'Meara. "There are a variety of views in our community on this matter," said Mayor Rob Burton. "We have heard from a great many residents (and) businesses, and we thank you for your input. By following public health guidelines, Oak- ville and Halton resi- dents have crushed the curve. We have seen many people wearing face coverings voluntari-face coverings voluntari-f ly; however, we are will- ing to support this action to provide an extra mea- sure of protection in fighting this pandemic."fighting this pandemic."f Oakville resident Mi- chelle George, a delegate at the virtual meeting, spoke up against the mandatory enforcement of masks as someone who has experienced bouts of dizziness, head- aches and mild disorien- tation while wearing one. "I can appreciate the concern we are facing right now, with COVID being so prevalent around the globe, but I think that what's being acknowledged is that one method will not suf- fice for every individual.fice for every individual.f "We have to accept that there are people out there who are unable to wear a face mask ..." Drew Redden, presi- dent and CEO of the Oak- ville Chamber of Com- merce, said businesses would follow the recom- mendations of public health. "We want to make sure that businesses are reopening safely and have all the tools in their tool box to do so, and that they're supported in that manner. It's also impor- tant to remember busi- nesses have been through a lot, so we will support any measures that help ensure that our businesses are able to re- main open as we navi- gate the upcoming months of this pandem- ic." Should public health recommend masks be worn, then local busi- nesses would "absolutely be supportive," said Red- den. "Our priority is that our businesses are able to open safely. We want to avoid another shut- down, if possible, and we'll welcome any mea- sures that allow us to keep our businesses open on the advice of public health." Burton strongly en- courages residents to wear masks in public in- door settings and follow the public health guide- lines. "Face masks are not a substitute for hand- washing, covering coughs and sneezes and practicing physical dis- tancing," added Burton. STORY BEHIND THE STORY: Halton Region's request for voluntary compliance in wearing a face mask in indoor pub- lic spaces apparently didn't sit well with Oak- ville residents. Town councillors took up the torch and voted unani- mously in favour of re- questing staff develop a bylaw to make face masks mandatory - a move they hoped would prompt the region to reconsider a similar regionwide direc- tive.
