MuSical inStruMEntS MuSic lESSonS TO THE EDITOR: A CULTURE THAT ABHORS SILENCE I concur with the edito- rial on Aug. 29 about "The World is Getting Noisier," and subsequent letters from Sept. 19. I'll add that a particular- ly inappropriate form of noise pollution is the habit of piping into places such as city indoor swimming pools, not just Muzak but commercial AM radio sta- tions. Their content is about 40 per cent high pres- sure advertising and I don't see why in public, taxpay- er-funded spaces it should be mandatory that clients listen to such and such a used-car dealer sales pitch, or carpet cleaning service or whatnot. It's an inappro- priate, perhaps even legal- ly dubious, practice that has drifted into (society) due to a culture that abhors silence. JOHN GOYDER OAKVILLE TO THE EDITOR: BYLAW ENFORCEMENT STRATE- GY MAKES NO SENSE I read the article about the real estate sign. I, for one, am sick of the town enforcing some by- laws because it's easy and failing to enforce others that are more difficult, such as trucks delivering to Fortinos after hours and on Sundays. Also, I wonder why the town has time to pick up signs, but no time to clean up weeds along our main roads. J. CARR OAKVILLE TO THE EDITOR: CARTOON MAKES CANADIANS APPEAR SMUG, SAYS READER Regarding the (editori- al, page 6) cartoon in the Oakville Beaver Sept. 5 edi- tion: Highlighting the sad cir- cumstances of our Ameri- can neighbours in this way is insensitive, to say the least. Smug is not a good look for Canada. LESLEY CLARKE BURLINGTON LETTERS & COMMENTARY EVERY DAY WE TELL YOU ABOUT THAT IMPACT INSIDEHALTON.COM
