NEWS Milton Transit ridership, revenue up in Q1 2018 1 town eouncillor not Impressed with statistics TIM WHITNELL twhitnell@metroland.com Ridership and revenue were up on Milton town buses for the first three months of this year, but one councillor doesn't see it as good news. Councillors received a Milton Transit report for the first quarter of 2018 at their most recent council meeting. There was a five per cent increase in rider- ship compared to the first quarter of 2017; revenue passenger trips grew by six per cent during the same period. Ridership in the first quarter of 2018 grew by more than 7,100 boardings compared to the same peri- od last year, with more than 140,200 boardings in the first quart®r, stated a Town of Milton press re- lease. "Transit growth contin- ues to be influenced by lo- cal economic and residen- tial growth, service en- hancements and service reliability improvements made in 2017," said the town. Rick Mal- boeuf, a regular transit critic. "Why can't we get quar- terly ridership numbers faster? We are almost at the end of the second quarter (April-June) and we're now getting the first quarter numbers. Why do we have to wait 10 weeks?" Paul Cripps, the town's commissioner of engineer- ing services, told council, "We understand the coun- cillor's frustration and we are working on this." Malboeuf then noted that relatively recently in- troduced extended evening hours and weekend bus service is costing taxpay- ers $500,000 per year. "It (extra services) didn't exist seven months ago and people did without it," he noted, saying it's not a good use of taxpayer dol- ® See NEWS, page 13 EXPERTS IN LEATHER, PLASTIC & VINYL RESTORATION \ : www.fibrenew.ecom/mwest Since 1987.
