At 12:53 p.m.on Jan. 17, € police were dispatched to Canadian Champion | Thursday, February 1,2018 | & the Milton courthouse holding cells (491 Steeles Ave.) for a report of an in- mate who was in distress. ~ Uniform police offi- cers, firefighters and EMS responded. to the scene and found the vic- tim unconscious and un- responsive. The preliminary inves- tigation revealed that the | victim, a remanded in- mate, was housed in a holding cell with other in- mates waiting to appear before the judiciary on criminal charges. While in the holding cell, several Halton Regional Police Service Special Consta+ bles observed the victim in distress. These officers immedi- ately entered the holding cell and quickly deter- mined he was not breath- ing. They quickly removed the victim from the cell and an Automated exter- nal defibrillator (AED) was obtained. The offi- cers determined the vic- tim to have a pulse and the , officers then suspected the victim was suffering from an opioid overdose. The AED was not used to administer electrical shocks. Officers quickly initiated emergency re- sponse procedures. Police, Halton EMS and firefighters quickly responded to the court- house and took carriage of the victim. Halton EMS. administered Naloxone, a, drug which blocks or re- AYAS IR RY verses the effects of epioid overdoses, and the vic- tim's condition improved. The 33-year-old victim was subsequently trans- ported to hospital. Anoth- er inmate and a Special Const. were also trans- ported to hospital for pos- sible ° cross-contamina- tion of unknown opioids. All parties were later re- leased. When the victim was released from hospital he wrote a letter to thank the Halton Regional Police Service. In it he writes, "Never in my entire life would I ever be able to imagine that a police offi- cer would be one to save my life. You all have changed my line of think- ing." Said Det. Sgt.
