"THE PLACE TO GET THAT RECORD" "The Giant Revival ab the im- Sixteen years ago, fhrough son, the pressive pitching of Math impressive world = series victories evér known. They shut out the Ath- letics In four out of five games, Matty pitching twenty-seven score- less innings, backed up by champion- ship support. Since that brilliant melee the Giants' average in world series play has been singularly depressing, not to say superlatively sour. In four lattempts against the Athletics, Red | Sox and White Sox they wera rolled | back into the gravel ditch, marred and mangled, without a triumph. In view of these facts, what chance is there now for a Giant re- vival? ---- The Record. Here is the Giants' world series record: 1905 vs. Athletics ,won four and lost one, 1911 vs. Athletics, lost four. 1912 vs. Red Sox, lost four. 1913 vs. Atheltics, won one and lost four. 1916 vs. White Sox, won two and lost four. This shows a total of twelve vic- tories and seventeen defeats, not so lopsided as it might appear in view of the general results. But since the 1905 machine that carried Mathew- ison, McGinnity, Bresnahan, Donlin, and other stars, the average has been 'a trifle soggy, with only eight vie- tories 'against seventeen defeats for ia mark of .333. With good pitching, which the club has been getting of late, there is at least a fair chance for a throw- back to ancient days, for any ball club that can grace the field with Frisch, Bancroft, Kelly, Young and Burns--among others--is no rickety machine, won. two and won three and Some people are so funny that they make others sad. The latest outfit to kink up the monicker of the "Ottawa Ex- press" are the Eskimos, of Edmon- ton. They are said to have offered Cleghorn over $2,000 toi jump to the Alberta League, providing the Ot- tawas would let him go. It's a big proviso, and, according to latest dope, the Senators won't let the Wally Reid of the league away, October Rod and Gun. The October issue of Rod and Gun in Canada will be perused with great pleasure by all those to whom the great outdoors is calling. "Nova Sco- tia Fishing As It Is" appears in this splendid number written in a fascin- ating, original way ° by Percy E. Nobbs. H. Mortimer Batten's story entitled '"Banska, The Terrible" is of an appealing nature and will prove of intense interest to both young and old. "The Industrious One" by F. V. Williams will doubtless attract the interest of every reader. This togeth- er with stories and articles by the usual clever nature writers, Robert Page Lincoln, A. Bryan Williams, J. W. Winson, also the instructive col- umns of the various departments, add greatly to the value of the ma- gazine, and in their own mysterious way impart to it the spirit of au- tumn. Rod. and Gun in Canada is published monthly by W. J. Tayler, Limited, Woodstock, World Series "Split." This is the way in which 'world series money is divided: 15 per cent, of the gross receipts of all games id to the secretary- treasurer of advisory council. 60 per cent. of the balance from the first five games goes into the players' pool and is divided: 75 per cent. to the winners in each league, 60 per cent. to the winners of the world series and 40 per cent. to the losers. 20 per cent. to the second and third highest teams in each league, 60 per cent, divided among the teams finishing third. Balance of gross receipts divided equally between clubs, each clud paying 50 per cent. into its league treasury, or 756 per cent. in case the eighth and ninth games of a series are played. me -------- Golf Clubs Amalgamate. Bay of Quinte Country Club will be proceeded with at once. This comes as a result of the Belleville Golf Club, Limited, voting in favor of amalgamation with the proposed country club. The latter has elected permanent directors, as follows: S. Robertson, S. R. Burrows, Jamieson Bome, R. D. Ponton, George K. Gra- ham, J. S. McKeown, G. H, Gilles- pie, W. J. Hume and Henry Taylor. The new golf course is three miles west of the city. The land is seveu- ty acres in extent along the shore of the Bay of Quinte and will make an ideal nine-hole course. ay The Golf Club. Tho prospects for the formation of a golf club in Renfrew are exceeding- ly bright. Keen interest is being taken in the matter by quite a num- ber, and the committee has already made considerable progress in the matter of looking over possible sites. The Philadelphia Athletics, accord- ing to reports from Oakland, want Olaude Cooper, fleet outfielder of the Oaks. re { LITTLE BITS : 3 In some things the Yanks may ine ogolf. Barnes and Hutchinson have several times been trimmed by Duncan and Mitchell, Jones has been beaten by Anderson and Miss Cecil Leitch, British champion, has defeated the United States women's champion. A few positions on the McGill team still have a vacant look about them in spite of the fact that the 1920 team is reported to be almost intact, Some person told George Awrey that they had never used a tackling dummy at Queen's before. Shades of Capt. Curtis and other oldtimers! You bet they used ome, and they didn't have soft pads. to fall on either. . Smith, the sprinter, looks like a comer in the rugby line. If he can develop a tackle he will make a good man. We read "McGill had the biggest turnout of the season when about fifty men turned out, etc." Shucks, we have fifty out at poor little Queen's. Where are those 150-man rugby squads the Montreal papers used to talk 'about ? "Jeff" Notman is reported to weigh 225 pounds when stripped, this year, and has developed more speed. Bigger they are the harder they fall. Cope may be shifted to outside wing for the Red and White, with McGregor going to the snap-back position. The Yale University rugby team's players will be numbered with the names of the players by numbers on the score cards. This would be ap- preciated very much by Canadian spectators. No standing room to be sold at the world's series games this year, is the news that comes from headquar- ters. Even at that Ban Johnson was going to propose a 50c. bleeche: seat for the series, Just the same, that Carroll, Phil- lips, Anderson, Flanagan, Russell combination with McGill is not to be smiled at. Flanagan was always good and that one bad streak in last year's final game is likely to be his last as well as his first, Meanwhile we awalf patiently the formation of a city rugby league of some kind. And also meanwhile--Arthur's cup for the Mercantile League awaits an owner. em Report from Washington ds that Jim Shaw, pitcher, has been waived out of the big league and will be shipped to Rochester in the Interna- tionai.
