Mrs. Walter ' Ross | Hearty. [Picton Gaze. { Sunday marked the ninetieth birth- day of Mrs, 'Walter Ross, Picton's {grand old lady, and familiarly known hy a very wide circle of town friends las "Grandma Ross." Despite her very advanced age, Mrs. Ross was able to soe a number of her friepds who call ed on the happy auspicious occasion ta wish her very many happy returns of the day. She expressed the opinion that she had not enjoyed better health in some time and certainly her fresh merry langh as she talked cheerily with friends emphasized her remark The passing years seem to sit vesy lightly on her snow-white head re. Ross was born ninety years ago at the little historie village of Bath, on the Bay of Quinte shore, of U.EL. parentage Her maiden name was Clara Louisa Marin Fairfield. Her father, William Fairfield, when the Un- {ited States declared their independence | from the mother land, took his family and left all at the mercy of the op- posite party to continue loyal to Eng- land and came to @anada. In a small hoat he 'the lake from the point now Syracuse to the little vil- lage of Qath, and herd set up his home. Scateely had he established himself than his enémies in spite came across the lake to take what few goods he had in his little boat. But the voung of the family were equal to the occasion and learning of the scheme they promptly scuttled the lit- tle craft. When the Americans learn edd of this trick, knowing that if they dared out in the boat they would be drowned, they set fire to the vessel and watched her burn to the water "u edge in Bath harbor. Thus twice hac the Fairfield kin' lost their all for the land they loved, true to the mother- land. Nothing daunted the family re- ceived its allotted portion from the home government and Mrs. Ross' fath- er established a general store in. the settlement. When a young maiden of some six- teen years, Louisa Fairfield first came to Picton to keep house for her brother, the late Judge Faictield, then practising law in this, the county town. Later, on his appointment to thé bench, he marvied and his sister left his home to enter a home of her own as the wife of the late Dr. Abra ham Vim Vieek Pruyn. Their home was on Main street, where John H. Allan now lives, Their marriage was celebrated on June 20th, 1845, in the old historic U. E. L. English church still standing at Bath, Dr. Pruyn dies in 1556 Her second mfirriage was to Walter Ross, September 14th, 1861, who, at the time was Picton's most prominent dry-goods merchant. Then Mr. Ross went into politics apd for. sixteen years he represented Prince Edward in the dominion house in the liberal <m terests. During that, time he built the big homestead on East Main street, now-the McMullen property. One of the most interesting events of Mrs, Ross' lile and oue of particu lat local interest was when, in 1875, she turned the first sod jor the Cen- tral Ontario _railway. This was a histary making day for the county. Mrs, anniversary of her birth brings out the interesting fact that her descemlants aré now living to the fourth generation, her great. grandchild being little Sybil Moken Hale and crossed sons Ross' very PRINCE ALBERT NEWS, Terrible Death of Boy Last Week. On Thursday evening the Young Men's Club had a banquet in the ladies' parlor of the Queen Street Methodist church, and the event was thoroughly enjoyed. J. Bennett, the president of the club, presided, and the toasts invited some able and very interesting speeches, Those having reference to the future of Canada, the things that make for success, and the future of the club, in usefulness and power, were nil ably good. They were instructive in their quality, inspiring in their char acter and helpiul in their efiects. In deed the young men were most heart ily vomplimgnted upon the. excellence of their Puli speaking. The pastor of the church, the super intendent of the Sunday school, and the leaders of the club were all toast ed, and made suitable speeches. The sentiment which best expressed the heart of the young men was that which suggested work that would live long after they had been separated, as they are bound to be in the course of time, and work which would be in spired by the teachings and impres- sions of the present The banquet was designed velop the young men inthe public ex- pression of stheir thoughts on certain subjects, amd in this respect it was a pronounced success. to de A Tea And Sale.
