Five of eight of the candidates run- ning for Oakville's three spots took turns taking jabs at the current board's decisions and tactics - and with the two incumbents among the no-shows, there was often no one to give a second opinion. About 60 people attended the event, organized by the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Associ- ation (OECTA) and held at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School. Audience members took turns for their chance at the micro- phone, regularly returning to a small roster of themes: consulting parents and students on board de- cisions, repairing the relationship between the board and the school community, and how to balance Catholic morals with the realities of young people today. Many of the candidates' re- sponses referenced the board's controversial Sanctity of Life poli- cy, which prevented schools from fundraising for "charities or non- profits that publicly support, ei- ther directly or indirectly, abor- tion, contraception, sterilization, Oakville Catholic trustee candidates Nancy Guzzo, Jeff Mamer and Chris Saunders prepare for the debate at Holy Trinity high school on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018.
