The speech mentioned a number of projects the new government plans to tackle including introduc- ing 15,000 new long-term care beds over the next five years, replacing thefive years, replacing thef 2015 Ontario sex education curriculum and spending $3.8 billion to combat men- tal health and addiction is- sues to name a few. "We have a clear man- date from the people," said Premier Doug Ford in a press release. "We are ending the deadlocked strike at York University so students can get back to school. We are striking the cap-and-trade tax from the books, and we are cancelling unneces- sary renewable-energy projects to help lower your electricity bills." Oakville MPP Stephen Crawford, who defeated longtime Liberal incum- bent Kevin Flynn during the recent provincial elec- tion, said the speech from the throne continues the conversation that the Pro- gressive Conservatives had with Ontarians dur- ing the election campaign. "During the election we talked about making life more affordable for indi- viduals, families and small businesses and dur- ing this session of the leg- islature, we will begin the work to make this hap- pen," said Crawford. "I think that the respon- sible first step is establish- ing where things really stand with a line-by-line audit of the government books. From there, we can move forward in an ac- countable way to lower taxes, reduce hydro rates, bring down gas prices and introduce more long-term care beds to ease health- care wait times." Crawford said these are the priorities voters dis- cussed with him during the campaign and noted he is excited about imple- menting them. "I look forward to con- sulting with Oakville resi- dents on each of them and making sure that their voices are heard at Queen's Park," he said. Oakville North-Bur- lington MPP Effie Trian- tafilopoulos said she was very pleased by the first Throne Speech, noting the new PC government's plans aligned with the campaign commitments that were made. "We are moving quickly to keep our commitments and bring real change for Ontario. We want to re- store accountability and trust in our government," she said.
