It is true that one cr two mines have advocated the dropâ€" ping of the duty in these lines, but the mines generally have not taken any concerted action. However there will be general interest in the attitude of the Mackenzie King Government in dealing with this question, in view of the implied pledges in the party platâ€" form. f industry,. Wili mining machinery be placed on the free list? 'Tho‘sp who wigh this question to be answered in the affirmative argue that the revenue from the tariff on mining machinery and supplies is not of very great imâ€" portance to the Government,â€"the Goâ€" vernment could get along nicely withâ€" out it. Nevertheless it is a more or less serious handicap to the mining inâ€" dustry, and the percentage of tariff in some cases would mean the difference between profitable mining for some of the smaller concerns and costs that make mining prohibitive. The idea of the Protection system hitherto in force, as implied by the word ‘‘Proâ€" tection,"" was to protect Canadian maâ€" nufacturers and industries from forâ€" eign competition. Even, under this system most of the mining machinery and supplies would ‘be on the free list, as the equipment and materials come here from foreign countries. (On the other hand, there are a number of Canadian concerns that would be afâ€" fected by placing all mining machineâ€" ry and supplies on the free "list and these concerns may naturally be exâ€" pected to oppose any change in the tariff. The attitude of the new Govâ€" ernment in the matter will be watched with much interest. Although the Liberals refused to make the tariff the issue in the recent Dominion election, and though,. many of the elected Liberals are professed Protectionists, still the Liberals as a party are more or less pledged to some measure of ‘‘free trade,‘‘ *‘ freet trade,"‘ or "tariff for revenue only,"" or whatever other way you like to exâ€" press it. Accordingly, there is some interesting speculation as to what will be done about machinery and supplies, etc. of particular interest to the mining industry. Will mining machinery be placed on the free list? Those who wigh this question to be answered in the affirmative argue that the revenue New Government Seems So Pledged. Most Should Have Been Free Under ‘‘Protection‘‘ System. WILL MINING â€"MAGHINERY BE PLAGED ON FREE LIST? The last issue of The Pas Herald contains the following item that will be of local interest:â€"‘‘The annual meeting of the Northern Manitoba Mining ‘Co. will be held Dec. 14th. for election of officers and consideration of a proposal for the sale of the mine to Eastern interests. It is understood that Harry Darling who holds the opâ€" tion on the property has organized a party of monied men who are able to see the deal through and provide plenâ€" ty of working capital.‘‘ *Provincial Travelling License Ins pector Blackwall, formerly license in& pector for, Temiskaming, but recently given supervision over practically all the north country, has been making things lively, or otherwise, in Kenora. At one place he seized 160 cases of liquor, five cases of beer, one barrel of ‘beer, ‘60 gallons of ‘brandy, 115 loose bottles of liquor, two gallons of Port Wine, four gallons of Sceotch whiskey, and nine barrels of various liquors, each containing 42 gallons. At another place there were a seizure of 34 cases of liquor. L THIS INTERFERKS WITH MERRY CHRISTMAS _ Word was received last week of the discovery of the body of a trapper named Ricard who had been lost a few days in the bush near Bingle on the Transcontinental east of ©Cochrane. Ricard was out trapping with an Inâ€" dian and became lost in the bush. The Indian said that Ricard left to follow a moose. When Ricard failed to reâ€" turn even when night came, the Inâ€" dian, realizing the futility of attempt. ing alone to find the missing man in the bush, went to CocHrane for assisâ€" tance. ‘Four dfireâ€"rangers raturned with the Indian and a thorough search was made, Eventually Ricard was found. He was startding leaning against & tree and there were tears frozen on his eyes and cheeks. He had frozen to death in an attempt to find his way ‘back to the camp. He had no matches with him and had been unâ€" able to start a fire so that he could keep warm until another morning came that would enable him onece more to reach his companion.
