But local environmentalist Susan Koswan, one of the driâ€" ving forces behind the local Ontario‘s doctors emphâ€" sized the importance of knowâ€" ing how to protect yourself and your loved ones against smog recently as the OMA released an updated version of their ‘OMA Smogâ€"Wise Information Program‘ for the summer of Some concern about larvicide Doctor‘s update ‘Smogâ€"Wise‘ information We are very excited this year that we have received such an overwhelming response to our call for norhinations in both our EcoFriendly and Business Competitions. Her first concern is that methoprene does affect other species when it breaks down into _ something _ called retinoids that affects animals like frogs. "They cause deforâ€" mities in frogs in particular," said Koswan. "This stuff is getâ€" ting flushed into our water system and you have to wonâ€" der what it‘s going to do to us?" As a means of eliminating mosquitoes, Koswan said that the process isn‘t infallible and will give people a false sense of security instead of taking the common sense precauâ€" tions that everyone should take including avoiding the peak biting hours at dawn "There has never been any doubt that smog kills," says OMA President, Dr. Larry Erlick, "Doctors see the adverse effects of smog in our offices and emergency wards every day â€" we realize the importance of giving people the tools they need to protect themselves." "It only kills the mosquiâ€" toes that are in the basin at the », _ Waterlqo > Communities _« in Bloom time," said Koswan. "There‘s no proof this will eliminate West Nile Virus." Koswan suggests the betâ€" ter options are the more natâ€" ural ones including building up a tolerance to the virus in children like they‘ve done in Africa as well as enhancing the entire ecosystem so that more of the mosquitoes natâ€" ural predators like frogs and fish could take care of them. "It‘s a better thing to let stuff happen," said Koswan. "We can also take action ourâ€" selves by removing standing water, wearing longâ€"sleeved clothing and avoiding being outside when the mosquitoes are biting. "We should take a more holistic approach and build up our personality immunity and build up ecosystem health so that we‘re better able to withstand these types of things because they‘re just going to keep happening." The OMA _ Smogâ€"Wise Information Program â€" was launched last summer to proâ€" vide all Ontarians concerned about their own health with information that they can use to help stay safe when smog levels aré high. The OMA _ Smogâ€"Wise Information Program provide answers to many smog related questions, such as: Is my family safe as long as a Smog Alert hasâ€" n‘t been called?; How do I tell when the smog is dangerous?; What health conditions make one person more vulnerable to smog than another@Are chilâ€" dren more at risk from smog? .« For more information, visit wwwoma.org.
