PAGE 24 â€" WATERLOO CHRONICLE, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 26, 1994 Timeless treasure Nick Drake left his life â€" the confusion, the pain, the melancholy, the isolation â€" in his songs. When this troubled genius took his own life in 1974 at the age of 24, it was aimost as if his words and music had already warned us of the tragedy Perhaps it‘s his brilliant. innovative guitar style Or the pervasive cello embellisnments. Or his dusky voice and the vivid imagery his words convey All of these makes Drake one of the genuinely special artists of the last quarter century. Way To Blue. suffice to say, is essential listening. Rymes With Orange Trapped in the Machine An impressive debut from a band that has so far made a name for themseives because of, well, their name But unlike so many bands whose clevemess ends there, Vancouver‘s Rymes With Orange cares theirs through to the music. Trapped in the Machine offers a generous blend of hardâ€"driving rockers, catchy pop and lovely bailads Drake compilation essential listening When his biilliance was cut short, we were left with only three albums and a few odd facks. But as this 16â€"track compilation makes clear. Drake left a timeless treasure that grows more vital and aweâ€"inspiring with age. Rarely has music so easily and deeply penâ€" etated the soul. Hauntingly beautiful and like a gentle breeze on an overcast day, Drake‘s songs, which in hindsight might be considâ€" ered jazzâ€"folk dirges. actually have a lifeâ€" affiiming quality to them. Too generous, perhaps. At over 60 minutes. Trapped is about a third too long. Some materal should have been saved for the next relegase. which, by what‘s indicated here, should be worth waiting for. Smashing Pumpkins Pisces Iscaniot Virgin When you become an unlikely success story as the Smashing Pumpkins have., it‘s usuâ€" ally safe and commercially viable to release some odds and ends that otherwise wouldn‘t have seen the light of day Way To Blue An Infroduction to Nick Drake Pisces Iscaniot however, isn‘t just a batch of rejects. Among the Bâ€"sides and outtakes from last year‘s Samese Dream are some keepers, notably a lovingly crafted rendition of Stevie Nicks‘ Langslide and a radical overhaul of The Animals‘ A Gif From Sandoz. The original material falls short of anything on Siamese Dream or their wonderful debut, Gish, but overall, Pisces Iscariot should keep Pumpkins fans content until something more substantial artives The Church Sometime Anywhere At their best, The Church write entrancing pop epics built around shimmering guitars, abstract lyrics and Steve Kilbey‘s worldâ€"weary vocals. On their off days, they‘re guilty of overindulgence on all counts. Sometime Anywhere, which finds the band down to Kilbey and guitarist/singer Marty Willâ€" sonâ€"Piper, falls somewhere in between. There are moments that approach pop nirvana, yet others where Kilby and Piper are prone to pop reveries that drift off into nevertand. With some trimming, Sometimes Anywhere might have been a great album. As it stands, it‘s still better than much of what pop music has to offer. Gilby Clarke Clarke has a blueâ€"collar style that‘s a refreshing departure from G ‘N‘ R‘s increasâ€" ingly turgid superstar posturing. It transiates into a consistentty solid set of bluesy rockers that highlight Clarke‘s fine playing, particuâ€" larty his gritty slide guitar. Ross MacDonald is a Cambriage freelance This is far from the disaster critics are making it out to be. the exâ€"Guns ‘N" Roses guitarist‘s first solo flight never soars, but doesn‘t crash, Streamers trom 99° 61 a a= & i1 | > / Coloured & P Y S3 Glme&, ;i:'l‘;smy Orange and ; Black Napkins ces sorie §< 2 \ from1.99 / , N M 746â€"2704 o M 55 Northfield Dr. E., Waterloo (behind Conestoga Mall) OPEN 7 DAYS A WEEK10â€"10 VDE, rmRray rme(| m WEEN MANLIL visa > mastencand « Amtmican Oxreess aades in Ades siguim Viraaait Apmarssion Apeeean t 0 monpar pec 5. con‘f [ TKKETS: $15.00 and $12.00 Barney‘sjewellers & Gemologists YX t & Whirgpe 26â€" mumgle ) C va unstring Costumes agcâ€"=A Rallaange 578â€"1570 i X1â€"800â€"2658977 wem=s..
