To Mr. Helliwel a graduate of _ Waterloo _ Collegiate, painting is just a hobby. His working hours are spent as a professional interior deâ€" corator, a trade he trained for in Edinburough Scotland. ‘‘I don‘t paint all the time, just when I‘m in the mood." the 21 year old Waterloo resident said, "I would clasâ€" sify the paintings I do as semiâ€"abstracts. Right now I‘m going through a change of painting style. I find I‘m changing from the nice type to bringing out myself more. In explaining what he meant, Mr. Helliwel said Christmas time secret Mr. Helliwel thinks his paintings are becoming an extension of himself, "for example, once I had a bad time in New York and this was inspiration for one of my paintings." he used to paint to please others, but now he is getting more into pleasing himâ€" self. The term semiâ€"abstract which Mr. Helliwel uses to describe his paintings is more an ‘individual desâ€" cription than a clearly deâ€" fined category in which his painting are placed. ‘"Someâ€" one else may call it ab stract," he said "I haven‘t had any formal <training in painting." He added he couldn‘t see himself doing it full time or trying to make a living out of it. His interest in painting started in his youth. At 12 he had already produced sevâ€" eral paintings which sold. "I have generally been inâ€" terested in things of value or beauty. I remember when I was nine or ten years old L used to go to the library and take out a book because of the design on the cover. He said everyâ€" constantly reminded they should not .touch. If a person wants to touch his paintings then Mr. Helliwel feels they should be able to. He feels texture is an important part of a painting‘s evaluation as people react better when they can touch sontething.
