I have known Harvey as ‘ long as I have known Hydro." | Recalling Sir Adam Beck, he said , that the latter had the courage to face conditions in the Province [at that time as no other man ! had. "And that." he added, "is the reason I devoted my life to ' Hydro." Two men who helped pioneer the Hydro movement in the colorful days of Sir Adam Beck are among this year‘s eighteen long â€" service award recipients, These men together represent a record of faithful public service totalling more than 330 years. Ontario Hydro Chairman W. Ross Strike, who made the presâ€" entation of framed certificates Tuesday night, at the 53rd. anâ€" nual meeting of the Ontario Municipal Electric Association said C. J. Halliday of Chesley and Harvey O. Hawke of Galt, have the longest service of any local Hydro commissioners in Ontario. There was a hush in the crowded meeting room as Mr. Strike spoke quietly: "They were friends of Sir Adam Beck and down through the years they have really carried the torch. They attended the first meetâ€" ings of the O.M.E.A. which they have served for some 40 years." Taking into account eight years on council and four years as mayor of Chesley in addition to his proud Hydro record, Mr. Halâ€" liday actually has to his credit more than half a century of public service. Mr. Hawke served his community on the board of education for a number of years as well as blazing the Hydro trail in Galt where he was active on the local utilities commission for nearly forty years. Mr. Halliday, in closing, made a strong appeal to young people to take a greater interest in public life. He wondered why so many were reluctant to serve their communities. All the longâ€"service award reâ€" cipients were seated at a special table, each wearing a white boutâ€" onniere. Nervous, outâ€"ofâ€"sports, afraid to meet people? There is a new drug to combat mental depresâ€" sion, But don‘t be depressed if you have trouble spelling it. The name is: j Benzyltetrahydrofurfurlylamines. Mr. Strike paid a warm and moving tribute to the entire group, emphasizing that these men did not serve for selfish gain. Their greatest reward, he said, found expression in the dedicated service they had renâ€" dered to Hydro and the people of their communities.
