Car and Driver Magazine in the U.S. gave the Cirrus one of its "10 Best" awards for three consecutive years. Where the Cirrus LXi will or will not be found when Daimler-Chrysler goes through the thumbs up/down on its model lineup is not clear. But considering all that's offered in the LXi package, buying or leasing one now might be the best consumer decision you make all year. JIM ROBINSON Chrysler has announced it will use radi cal surgery to restructure its car and truck divisions, eliminating Plymouth altogether and rendering some Dodges and Chryslers redundant. In some cases it makes sense. Until this year consumers could buy a Plymouth Neon, a Dodge Neon and in Canada, a Chrysler Neon. The same can be said for the Chrysler Concorde, Chrysler LHS, Dodge Intrepid, and Chrysler 300-M that all begin on one chassis pan in Bramalea. Which brings us to the Chrysler Cirrus LXi, a delight ful car that I hope doesn't get lost in the shuffle when the Daimler-Chrysler people get around to deciding o f the Cirrus, Sreeze, Stratus, Sebring and Avenger siblings which will stay and which will get the chop. What's attractive about the Cirrus is its strong engine, true independent suspen sion, and drop-dead good looks. It's sort o f a Chrysler 300-M without the size. The Chrysler Cirrus is only offered as the LXi and only as a four-door sedan. The Cirrus also comes with a new "one price" package. This one price o f $24,840 includes air conditioning, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, AM/FM stereo with cas sette, tilt steering wheel, cruise control, power windows and locks, heated external mirrors and an integrated three-button HomeLink universal garage opener. The engine is a 2.5-litre, single over head cam V6 providing 168 hp and 170 Road Worthy fVlb o f torque. Mounted transversely, it dri ves the front wheels through a four-speed electronic transmission with adaptive intel ligence that aligns itself with the driying style o f the person behind the wheel. In terms o f safety it has depowered airbags and power door locks that automatically lock the doors as the cars get underway. With its Cab-Forward design, the Cirrus is also roomy, with 51.5 cu. ft. o f passenger space in the front and 44.4 cu. fit. in the rear for a total o f almost 112 cu. ft. The truck is a largish 15.7 cu. f t as well. The back seat in the Cirrus folds down to create a wide entry to the trunk for hauling outsized items. And speaking of hauling, the Cirrus can trailer up to 1,000 lbs (454 kgs). Driving impressions were, well, impressive. The 2.5 V6 is a real sleeper with a very quick launch speed thanks to the adaptive transmission that soon learned how I like to drive. Vision, thanks to Cab Forward and a huge windshield is excellent although the tall trunk deck means you'll have to gauge where your rear bumper is vis-a-vis the other guy when backing up. Fuel economy was also quite acceptable at 12.2L/100 km (23 mpg) city and 7.7L/100 km (37 mpg) highway. And in terms of overall value,it's not just what I say. In its 1998 Initial Quality Survey, J. D.
