On Tuesday, the Oakville Fire Department unveiled two new vans covered from bumper to bumper in colourful, educational imagery extolling two of its most important messages. The first, says Chief Wayne Gould, is the need for everyone to plan and practice a fire escape plan. The second is to test home smoke alarms and change their batteries on a regular basis. To that end, Energizer Canada came on board as one of two corpo rate sponsors. The company's trade- marked "change your clocks, change your batteries" initiative - complete with the Energizer Bunny logo - is a perfect complement to the department's fire prevention mandate. "This was an opportunity to do something that is the first of its kind in Canada," said Energizer Brand Manager Guido DeVito. "The tie-in was an appropriate one." The unique graphics were pro vided by Owl-Lite Creative Imaging of Etobicoke. The compa ny's efforts mark the first time any fire department vehicle has employed "full body" graphics to get its objectives across. The vans - paid for out of the department's budget - are now four- wheeled billboards that can't help but catch the public's eye, says Gould. "We seized the opportunity to work with corporate sponsors to raise the profile of our fire safety messages," he said. "Hopefully they will not only get the message across to adults but also appeal to children as well." Now, fire prevention personnel can spread their message while dri ving to and from speaking engage ments and during the course of their day-to-day duties. "It was important to have spon sors working with us to promote fire safety in the community," said Gould. DeVito explained it was 12 years ago that Energizer Canada took a "corporate stand" to work with fire departments across the country for the promotion of fire prevention. The numbers, DeVito says, bear out the importance of the initiative: 12 years ago, one-third of all house holds had a malfunctioning smoke alarm or an alarm with a dead bat tery or none at all. "Twelve years later, the statistics are still the same," he said. "Hopefully we can change these statistics." DeVito maintains the program is not mere "commercialization" but a vital community service. "This is really what we want to do for fire prevention," said DeVito.
