"The numbers in each municipality By Irene Gentle SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER A Government of Ontario promise to pick up half the tab of public health and ambulance services will likely land Halton a net gain of just $500,000, said the Halton Region's Finance Commissioner Joe Rinaldo. Until recently, the region funded these' areas alone. That's because the new cash injec tion has triggered a recalculation of the provincial contribution to local commu nity reinvestment funds (CRF). Last year, Halton and its four municipali ties were given about $8.6 mil lion through CRF. That was to offset about $28 million in down loading costs. "While we're getting funding for ambulance it's important to know that local communities are losing the com munity reinvest ment funds," said Rinaldo. "They went through and did the calcula tions one more time. Under the new formula, the region itself will lose about $2 mil lion in reinvest ment funding. O a k v i l l e , Halton Hills and Burlington have also been stripped of their base funding. "They made adjustments for current value assess ments as well." Overall, Halton municipalities will lose about 80% of their CFR funding, or $6.7 million, said Rinaldo. "The worst scenario is that some municipalities will break even and some will come out ahead," he said. "Virtually every municipality will break even or better." Overall, the region will gain a half per cent break in costs under the new formula. Selected among thousands of entries in Sears Canada's Raptor Rookie for a Day contest, the lucky Oakville youngster had a player's-eye- view of the game and enjoyed a behind the scenes look at the Raptors locker room. "He was thrilled, and had a really busy day," said Jordan's mother Shannon Stange. "He got to shoot some baskets with Vince Carter, and sat right behind the Raptors bench for the whole game." Jordan's big day with the Raptors began with a tour of the Air Canada Centre and a behind-the-scenes look at the event. He was presented with an official Raptors team uniform and bas ketball. After the first quarter Jordan toured the Raptor's dressing room. "He sat in Vince Carter's chair, and drank Gatorade from their fridge," said Shannon. Jordan shot baskets for charity with the Raptor's Mascot during a time out. He sunk five baskets at one hundred dollars a pop. Jordan also read a short newscast for 680 News after the game which was broadcast on Saturday evening and Sunday morning. Jordan was the lucky winner among thousands of contestants. He filled out a contest ballot from the Oakville Beaver and dropped it in a ballot box at Sears in Oakville Place Mall. This is the contest's fourth year, and twenty- two Sears stores in the Greater Toronto Area participated. The Toronto Raptors will sign on one more rookie during the 1999 sea son.
