Lighting E lT O O R lm , Custom work gives interiors that unique look it's a wonder his devoted customers can keep track of him. After moving shop five times in seven years to accommodate his growing business, it's safe to say Robert Altiparmakyan has a following. The owner of Top Notch, makers of custom cab inets and reproduction furniture, has built a reputa tion for creating classic, reproduction pieces such as French country armoires, Irish linen presses and butler's pantries. His hand-rubbed, milk paint finishes are a favourite with interior decorators who can custom order distinctive pieces in just the right size or colour. Altiparmakyan says it was a keen interest in cus tom woodworking which led him to expand his business from an initial emphasis on renovations and additions. After showcasing his pieces at the One of a Kind craft shows in Toronto, the orders began streaming in, including work for Movenpick Marche. Altiparmakyan now ships across the country and to Europe. He employs nine full-time workers who tackle a variety of projects from building custom furniture to doing extensive home renovations. Over the years, Top Notch has turned its hand to everything from bars to bookcases, harvest tables to kitchen islands. It also brings in beautiful ladder back chairs from Quebec which are a perfect com plement to the shop's larger country French pieces. "People like the idea of having something unique made for them," says Altiparmakyan. "With carved mouldings and dovetailed drawers, these are pieces you can't go out and get everywhere." Despite the "custom" label, Altiparmakyan says his prices are competitive, even with specialty kitchen shops. His most popular piece, for instance, an Irish linen press, sells for $1995 or $2294 for a painted finish. The interior can be customized to serve as an entertainment centre or a variety of other uses, including, of course, storing linens. Most projects can be completed within four to six weeks and clients can select from a wide variety of ten stains and thirty authentic milk paint colours. Custom finishes can also be accommodated to blend with a clients specific decorating needs. Top Notch is located on the north side of Speers Road near Fourth Line. Photos by Peter J.
