Most cars operate at top energy efficiency when going between 80-90 kilometers per hour. At highway speeds, ever km/hour over 90 km increases fuel consumption by one percent. This is primarily due to wind resistance which rises great ly at highway speeds. Increasing your speed to 110 km/hour from 90 km/hour will increase fuel usage by some 20 percent. Slowing down to enjoy the scenery will not only lower your blood pressure, it'll keep more money in your pocket. 95 Includes labour and oil change SPEC SHEET KERRi SOUTH SERVICE RD. W. In an age where clearly understated design is the rule -- even for high-spir ited, race-bred sports cars -- the Firebird defiantly rages against popular convention. Oh, sure you could point to the ultra-exotic Lamborghini Diablo or Ferrari F355 as examples of cars that look as though they're breaking the sound barrier while at a dead stop. But for anything costing less than a pro sports franchise, the Firebird, especial ly tricked out in all its Trans Am glory, delivers an affordable, as well as high- ly-visual definition of the term 'perfor mance'. This is a car for people (primarily males in their mid-30s, according to Pontiac's research) who want to tell the world they've got what it takes under the hood to dust anyone who dares to challenge, whether at the stoplight or on the open road. These are the people who wouldn't buy a Corvette, Porsche 911 or even the closely-related Camara because they're styling is too conserva tive. For these automotive extroverts, the Firebird is happy to oblige. From its bulging, snub-nosed front end to its equally rounded rear deck and bumper, this beast seems to be in a permanent state of well-oiled muscle-flex. The amount of muscle you get depends entirely on the size of your 1999 Firebird ★ Two-door coupe available in base, Formula or Trans Am models, or two- door convertible available in base or Trans Am versions. ★ 3.8-litre OHV V6, or optional 5.7-litre OHV V8 producing 200 or 305 horse power (320 with Ram Air package), respectively. ★ Five-speed manual, four-speed auto matic (standard on Formula or Trans Am, optional on base Firebird), or six- speed manual (optional on Formula or Trans Am). ★ Visually grabs your attention like a punch to the kidney. ★ Quick enough (with the right options) to leave Mustangs gasping in the dust. ★ More usable room than a Corvette, and almost as fast/quick. ★ Base Price: $24,900 bank account, credit limit or trust fund. The Firebird basics begin with a 3.8-litre OHV V6 that's anything but tame. Producing 200 horsepower, this engine is the same V6 used in a variety of GM products, but is unique in that it powers the rear, instead of the front wheels through a five-speed manual, or optional four-speed automatic trans mission. But for real power-packed thrills, the only way to go is either the Firebird Formula or Trans Am model. Here, the base power is a 5.7-litre OHV V8. This isn't the 5.7 unit of old, but the real- deal LSI found nesded under the hood of the C5 Corvette. In the Firebird, the detuned LSI develops 305 horsepower, down from the 'Vette's 340-horse out- 1998 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX Fully loaded, 4-door, alloy rims, balance ot factory warranty, only 30,000kms. *20,995* GRAND AM Auto, air, cass., V6, ABS, dual airbags, balance of factory war ranty, low mileage. 1998 PONTIAC SUNFIRE Auto, air, power windows & door locks, cruise, cass., ABS & more. But the piece de la resistance is the Formula or Trans Am with the WS6 option code indicated on the build sheet. For the uninitiated, WS6 means you'll get the Ram Air Package, con sisting of a dual snorkel induction hood scoops, 17-inch polished aluminum wheels and P275/40ZR17 tires and a total output that has been tweaked to produce a tarmac-melting 320 horse power. A four-speed automatic comes standard on both the regular and Ram Air LSI, with a six-speed manual available as an option. Pontiac has seen to providing all coupe or convertible Firebirds with more than just the bare basics. Whatever you order, be prepared to drive away with no less than air condi tioning, cruise control, AM/FM stereo with CD player, rear deck spoiler, floor console, plus a host of other conve nience items. Moving into Formula or Trans Am territory will net you plenty more, such as traction control, remov able roof panels, upgraded audio sys tems and the like. As with most automobiles, the Trans Am is not everyone's cup of per formance tea. Sales from 1994 through 1997 have declined by one-third and shows no signs of bottoming out. Rumors persist that both the Firebird and Camara will fade into history in a couple of years, meaning your chances of being the automotive center of atten tion may be rapidly slipping away. Grab one while you can and you'll not only be quick, but you might just possess a rare piece of history. 1998 CADILLAC DEVILLE Leather, fully loaded, heated seats, balance of factory warran ty, low mileage. 1999 CADILLAC SEVILLE STS Leather, 300hp, northstar, one onwer trade-in, only 36,000km. $ By Malcom Gunn SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER "Best Buy" Award Winner 1996, 1997 and 1998.
