May 23 9:30 a.m. Regional Council COMMUNITY 'Pilons' win Robotics World Championship Team based out of E-Bots Robotics wins international tournament and skills competition in Louisville, Ky. SAIRA PEESKER sairapeesker@metroland.com The members of Oak ville's Pilons robotics team seem easygoing -- playful, even -- as they joke about all the hardware they won in their dominant season. But ask the new Vex Robot ics world champions how they'd feel if they hadn't killed it in competition this year, and they get serious very quickly. "We push ourselves to be the best, so not making it (to the Worlds) would be a real slap in the face," said Qaiz Mohamed, 17. "We've been a top team many years in a row," add ed Zain Lakhani, 14, wear ing a Pilons hat backwards. "We believe it's extremely important to keep the orga nization going ... To mentor each other as new people join the team." The 11 high school stu dents of the Pilons have spent years learning to build and program robots at E-Bots Robotics, which offers classes for people of all ages, but mostly chil dren and teens. The Pilons (the name refers to both the traffic cone and pi, the math concept) are the facil ity's top competitive team. On April 28, they won the Vex Robotics Competi tion's high school division tournament, and also the division's skills competi- tion. It was a dominant showing over about 600 other teams, which all had to qualify at regional tour naments to make it to the Worlds. About 30,000 people at tended the event, held in Louisville, Ky. Thousands of spectators were at each match, which were hosted by professional commenta tors. Competing teams had to build a robot that could pick up, stack and move cones to areas of the play ing field where they could score points. Each team pairs up with another team as an alliance in gameplay, so teams had to devise strategies that could defeat their opponents' robots while working together with another team they'd never worked with before.
