DAVID LEA dlea@metroland.com Halton police are hop ing someone will come for ward and help them catch a killer who has gone un punished for nearly 45 years. Pauline Ivy Dudley was just 17 when her lifeless body was found in a farm er's field in Oakville on Aug. 28,1973. In describing Pauline, Halton police Det. Const. Quince Buchanan, who is assigned to this cold case, painted a picture of a young woman who was just starting to make a life for herself. The former General Wolfe High School student had moved out of her par ents' Bronte home a year before her death and had moved in with her boy friend in Milton. The pair had recently done some travelling to gether, but in the summer of 1973 getting work was on Pauline's mind. Buchanan noted she had started applying for receptionist positions at various hotels in the area. The day Pauline went missing, Aug. 20,1973, Bu chanan said she had spent some time with friends and was later dropped off at her parents' Lakeshore Road home for a visit. She left their home at around 10 p.m., indicating she was heading home to Milton. Her boyfriend says she never made it. "The last person to see her was her mother," said Buchanan. "She was planning to hitchhike home." Pauline's boyfriend re ported her missing to Hal ton police the following day, Aug. 21. Her body was found by a farmer working his fields at the corner of Low er Base Line and Highway 25 in Oakville on Aug. 28. "She was found in an advanced state of decom position. She was fully clothed and partially bur ied under the hay and the wheat in that field," said Buchanan. "The cause of death was not determined due to the decomposition." Pauline had a hairline fracture of her jaw. Buchanan noted efforts to conceal the body also pointed to foul play. He said no motive was ever established for Pau line's death -- her wallet was found nearby. "There was nothing specific that would make you think, 'This is the rea son this person was mur dered,"' said Buchanan. During the investiga tion police tracked down several individuals who had been recently seen in the area where Pauline's body was found, however, nothing came of those in terviews. While Buchanan said there were suspects in Pauline's death the inves tigation never progressed to the point where police could lay charges. He said DNA was found at the scene, but declined to say what that DNA was. When asked if this DNA could ever help catch the killer Buchanan said he wasn't sure. "The samples degrade over time. Unfortunately I don't know if there will be enough to be retested and break this case," he said. "If there are advances in technology CFS (Centre for Forensic Sciences) will ask us to resubmit sam ples that weren't suitable before. If that is offered that is something we can do. That is an ongoing thing." Buchanan said there have been no recent devel opments in the cold case and noted that while the case is reviewed on an on going basis, there are plen ty of recent crimes to which police have to give • See NO, page 30 M U S IC A L IN S T R U M E N TS M U S IC LE S S O N S WWW.GRACECLINIC.CA ___ G R A C E C L I N I C PLASTIC, RECONSTRUCTIVE &.
