HIGH SCHOOL 59 White Oaks' Yang takes GHAC badminton title HERB GARBUTT hgarbutt@metroland.com Matthew Yang enjoys the finer points of badminton. "I like that it's more tech nique, rather than strength or speed," the White Oaks Secondary Student student said. But after winning a three-set match over Ryan Wallace of Hamilton's St. Thomas More high school in the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference final, he admitted that maybe there was room for im provement on another ele ment of his game. "I could use some work on my endurance," he said, before adding with a smile, "I probably should get start ed on that." Yang will have a couple of weeks to get ready for the OFSAA badminton champi onships in Windsor after his 21-11, 19-21, 21-13 victory earned him a spot at the pro vincial high school tourna ment. The Grade 11 student used to play competitively, but now just plays recre ationally once a week. Despite not having their best day on the court, Iro quois Ridge's Kerri L i and Yan Li won the GHAC mixed doubles title by de feating Milton District's Kartikeya Dhingra and N i cole Wen 21-19, 21-11. "We made a lot of mis takes in the first game," Ker ri L i said. The duo, who are not re lated, had not allowed an op- ponent to score in double digits in a match this season until the GHAC final. She said their pairing works well because they play differently than most pairs. "We don't have to play the traditional mixed doubles," she said. "We don't have to play front and back court. We can both cover the court." Iroquois Ridge's Mike Liu and Xianlin Ji also qual ified for the OFSAA tourna ment with a second-place finish in boys' doubles while Laura Dang and Linda Liu from White Oaks will move on after placing second in girls' doubles. Abbey Park's Jessie Yu an finished third in girls' singles. make a DIFFERENCE Nikki Wesley/Metroland Iroquois Ridge's Kerri Li, 17, and Yan Li, 19, (no relation) took won the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference mixed doubles title.
