D6 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, May 12, 1999 oakville Al Monthly Updute CHAMBER of - ^ j commerce About Your Chambei* ATHENA Award Program Ju st the fa cts... The ATHENA Award Program was introduced to Oakville by our Chamber in 1997, with the first recipient being Mayor Ann Mulvale. The program was created through the Chamber of Commerce in Lansing, Michigan in 1982 by Martha Mayhood Mertz, owner of Mayhood/Mertz Realtors Inc., to bring into focus the outstanding professional and business women in the com munity and to encourage the opening of leadership oppor tunities for women within the Chamber of Commerce and the community's work place. Today the ATHENA pro gram includes over 350 U.S. cities, has recognized more than 2,000 women and men for their business accom plishments, community ser vice, and opening doors of leadership opportunity for women. In 1994 Moscow, Russia became the first city outside of the U.S A to pre sent the ATHENA Award and since then Windsor, Ontario and Oakville have become participants. The criteria for the ATHENA Award includes recog nizing an individual for business professional accom plishments, for community service, and especially for mentoring others and providing a role model to encourage women to achieve their full leadership potential. Both men and women are eligible to receive the Award. Our 1998 recipient was Laura Kupferschmidt. Today the search commences for our 1999 recipient and our Chamber is anxious to locate as many worthy nominees as possible. Probably you know of someone who fits the criteria and if so, please call the Chamber office at 845-6613 and arrange to have a Nomination Form faxed to you. This will initiate the process and hopefully your nominee will be invited to our Annual General Meeting in September, to receive their ATHENA Award.
