B8 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday, May 12,1999 isA rts & E nterta inm ent OFFICIAL MEDIA SPONSOR OF THE OAKVITJE CENTRE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS Oakville Beaver Entertainm ent Editor: Carol Baldwin 845-3824 (Extension 254) Fax: 337-5567 Dance company raises funds for one-week Croatian tour By Carol B a ldw in ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR InMotion Dance Company has come full circle. Three years ago its founders, Lisa and Christine Brkich, choreographed a dance to reflect the raw, unresolved emotions that many o f their Croatian relatives are experiencing; and the two sisters dedicated their 20-minute piece to those who lost their lives in the (Croatian/Serbian) war. Now the dynamic duo is taking the dance company, which also includes dancers/choreographers Samantha Baldwin, Jen Bell, and Claire Ward, to Croatia to dance for the people who inspired them. But first they have to raise some money to help defray the costs of their one-week tour along the Croatian coast. And it only seemed natural that they raise that money through dance. Photo by Barrie Erskine Lisa Brkich, left, played Princess Penelope and Saman tha Baldwin was the Queen Mum in a production of The Princess and the Pea, recently staged for the children of Nottinghill Co-op Preschool. So, on Friday (May 14th), beginning at 7:30 p.m., the InMotion Dance Company will premiere the repertoire it will be taking to Croatia at St. Ignatius o f Loyola Secondary School (1550 Nottinghill Gate). "The primary reason (for the show) is to raise funds for our tour on May 20th to Croatia, where we will be per forming all our contemporary w orks...85% new work," says Lisa, adding that they will, o f course, be performing A ll's Fair in Love and ..., their 1996 dance about the war. Two other groups will be sharing the limelight with InMotion at Loyola - a Croatian choir, and Hrvatsko Prelo, a dance group from the Holy Trinity Croatian Church. "We wanted them to see what w e have to offer," Lisa explains. InMotion is a three-faceted dance company, she says. One facet does commercial or corporate work, which may include promoting a specific image or product or presenting a pro duction such as The Glory o f Gersh win, which they did at the Delawana Inn in Orillia last summer. The company's second and most beloved facet is its contemporary or original work, which, Lisa says, "is what we love to do." The third and most recent endeav our the company has taken on involves teaching. "We teach at local dance stu dios, and we have a summer camp, which focuses on dance - ballet, jazz, modem and tap," she says, adding that InMotion also offers workshops for children aged 5 to 9, at dance studios and at schools. These workshops include everything from dancing and creative movement to crafts and musi cal appreciation. "It teaches kids rhythm patterns. We use rhythmical toys. Kids have fun with it .. .We did one African workshop in Toronto...where the kids were studying Africa. And we also per formed for them," she explains, fol lowing a performance o f The Princess and the Pea at an Oakville preschool. Lisa, a graduate o f Ryerson Theatre School, says the kids' workshops and the complementary shows are partici patory, with the kids getting up and dancing or asking questions at the end o f the performance. "Art is a verb," adds Christine. "It's an active word." And the members o f this dance company are not just flexible on stage, they are also flexible when it comes to designing workshops. InMotion will modify the agenda or the production to fit the needs o f the participants. For more details on the InMotion Dance Company or its workshops, or for tickets to Friday's performance at Romance novel writing How to Write and Sell a Romance Novel, a workshop that will focus on novels for the internet, will take place on Saturday (May 15th) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Burlington Art Centre, 1333 Lakeshore Rd., Burlington.
