Although fewer than 5% of the passengers on any cruise ship complain of motion sick ness symptoms, it doesn't make you feel any better if you're one of them. Anyone who worries about sea sickness should first carefully plan ahead by careful selection of ship, itinerary, season, and cabin location, instead of medica tion as their solu tion (medication should only be the last remedy). If your previous experience is limited to sail boats, fishing boats or a stint in the Navy, the stability of mod em cruise ships may surprise you. Virtually, all cruise ships are equipped with retractable fin stabilizers that project underwater from each side of the vessel to counteract any side-to-side rolling motion. It is BOB KERBY Cruising estimated that they cut out 90% of the roll. But even the most modem stabilizers are not able to control pitching, the up-and- down motion of the ship's bow, so the captain does his best to avoid going into bad weather and heavy seas. Ships with a deeper draft ' (the measurement from the vessel's water line to the lowest point of its keel) usu ally perform better in rough seas than ships with a shallow er draft. Norwegian Cruise Line's flag ship, the "ss Norway" has a 35- foot draft while most cruise lines new ships built primarily for the Caribbean cruise trade, have 25-foot drafts. Ships that always dock in port rather than using tender service from an anchorage can also make a difference for a passenger extremely sensitive to motion sickness. Accommodations located amidships (about halfway between the bow and the stem) on a lower deck offer a more stable ride than the higher-priced deck and promenade deck locations. If you book a cabin too close to the bow or stem, you will feel every swell. Being in an inside cabin could cause more sensitivity to the ship's motion than an outside cabin where you can easily look out and spot on a fixed point like the hori zon. Going on deck and fixing on the hori zon is an excellent remedy for some pas sengers. The temptation to overeat or overindulge in drink hits many cruise pas sengers on embarkation day, when the world seems to be an endless display of tropical drinks and lavish buffets. If you're prone to motion sickness, eat and drink moderately, especially on embarkation day. Destination and itineraries can make a big difference for passengers concerned about motion sickness. Plan for smooth cruising to one of the summer's most favoured destinations -- the sheltered waters of cruising the Inside Passage of Alaska. You may also consider the rapidly expanding offerings of smaller cruise lines on some of the great rivers in Europe and North America for more guaranteed stable cruising. Conversely, if you're looking for a wilder ride, consider cruising where two great bodies of water come together such as South Africa's Cape of Good Hope, South America's Cape Horn (which was quite calm when we cruised it in 1998) and Cabo San Lucas, where the Sea of Cortez meets the Pacific Ocean. Other areas with power ful currents that give you quite a ride are the areas around the Falkland Islands, the Bay of Bengal, Bay of Biscay, Solomon Sea, Java Sea, Bering Strait, and way up north at Spitsbergen. Great weather for cruising is usually found in the Mediterranean Sea in summer and during the winter months in the Caribbean, two of the industry's most pop ular destinations. Happily, over 95% of us do not have to be concerned about such discomforts as motion sickness and for those that do, a wide variety of treatments are available to relieve the problem. Bon Voyage!
