You can take advantage of the sum mer months while taking a step towards a healthier you...get active! We all know that physical activity is good for us. But did you know that physical activity does not have to be very hard to improve your health? For example, walking -- one of Canada's most enjoyed forms of physical activi ty -- is fun and can help you feel great! Walking briskly for 30 minutes, four to seven days a week, makes you feel good, relieves stress, helps you achieve and maintain a healthy body weight, gives you energy, and can help reduce the risk of developing heart disease, osteoporosis, and certain cancers. If you can't get in step with walking for at least 30 minutes at one time, there's good news! The latest research shows that you can be active for 10 minutes, three times a day, and it will add up to be as beneficial to your over all health as one 30-minute period of activity. Walking is one of the greatest activ ities to get you started in the direction of regular physical activity. It's easy; it can be done almost anywhere, anytime and it's free! Walking is a great way to spend time with family and friends. It can be a fun, social event with friends and family, or a solitary, relaxing time. Osteoarthritis seminar A free seminar on osteoarthritis on June 23rd at the Ramada Inn. Osteoarthritis causes pain and immobility for one in ten Canadians. Unlike other types of arthritis that attack quickly and aggressively, osteoarthritis is slow moving and erodes away cartilage. This seminar is presented by The Arthritis Society and Halton Healthcare Services. Displays and refreshments begin at 6:30 p.m., with the seminar commenc ing at 7 p.m. To reserve a seat, call 338-4379. Uiu&HHEALTHNOTES Starting slowly is very safe for most people. Not sure? Consult your health professional. To help you get into the habit of walking, a new resource has been developed. "Walk This Way! - A Guide To Stick To It!" is a self-help kit. The kit includes a booklet with ideas on how to include walking in your day, stretches, tips on clothing and safety, as well as an erasable laminated board for planning and recording your walks. To receive your free copy of "Walk This Way! - A Guide To Stick To It!" please contact the Halton Regional Health Department at 825-6060 ext. 7474. TTY 905-827-9833. Why not take a step in the right direction? Get active! Lace up your walking shoes - start walking! Health Notes is prepared by staff of the Halton Regional Health Department. For free copy of 'Walk This Way' booklet, call 825-6060 ext. 7474 * Hospital survey wants patients' views Halton Healthcare Services (HHS) would like to know what you liked and didn't like about your visit to their two hospital sites -- Milton District Hospital (MDH) and Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). If you were a medical or surgical inpatient at MDH or OTMH in February or March 1999, there's a good chance you'll soon be asked for your opinion about your hospital stay. "Knowing our patients' percep tions of the quality of service and care they received can really help us," said Allan Halls, HHS senior vice- president. 'The results will provide us with a better understanding of what we are doing well and where we are not meeting patient expectations. This information will help guide our future directions and improvements." The patient satisfaction program is part of the Halton healthcare Services' quality improvement pro gram. The questionnaire asks people to evaluate staff courtesy, the admission process, nursing staff, physicians, communication, hospital care, return ing home, staff skill, and the cleanli ness of the facility using a three or five point rating scale. A similar survey was recently used by HHS to collect information from those who were patients in the Emergency departm ents at both OTM Hand M ilton District Hospital. Inquiries regarding the survey or any other aspect of hospital ser vices may be directed to Lisa Droppo, Halton Healthcare Services' Ombud at 338-4433.
