McElroy‘s work focused on rural scenes and rustic panoramas and, although some paintings contained human figures, they were usually secondary to trees, mountains and snowdrifts. McElroy said his inspiration came from nature and history, and his hisâ€" toric roots from his father who was also an artist and illustrator. After leaving school in 1939, McElroy began a career in art but joined the Canadian Army Active Service Force at the outbreak of World War II .
