The force is one of 25 ' finalists among 273 entries worldwide for the Webber Seavey Award, sponsored by the International Association of Chiefs of Police and Motorola. Halton police submitted the ser vice's 'Total Integrated Policing (TIP)' concept for consideration for the annu al award, said Deputy Chief Gary Crowell. A collaboration of community and police partnerships implemented in var ious programs and strategies, TIP has greatly enhanced the service's delivery of law enforcement, he said. For example, police used the team concept in Project Cemetery after an officer investigated a deplorable crime. An elderly widow had her purse stolen from her vehicle while attending the grave of her loved one. Implementing various partnerships through TIP resulted in such crimes being reduced by 50%, Deputy Chief Crowell said. The Nature Centre at Bronte Creek will be hosting a fun and infor mative day of activities and events focusing on archaeology and arti facts. Activities will run all day, start ing at 10 a.m. and concluding at 4 p.m. and will be held at the Nature Centre and the grounds around the Nature Centre. Visitors can make their own clay pots and learn the art of Woodland Period pottery making. Participate in the Smashed Pot activity, where you get a chance to participate in the puz zling world of archaeology. Watch as projectile points or "arrowheads" are made in the flint knapping demon stration. Have you ever found an "arrowhead?" Bring them in and have an archaeologist tell you about the people who made it and how long ago it was made. Bronte (905) 469-0071 Thief stole tools and owner's van A tool thief in Oakville not only stole a man's tools, but the culprit used the victim's vehicle to haul them away. During the Monday night of July 19th-20th, someone forced the front door locks to a white Dodge Caravan that was parked in the underground lot for 75 Stewart Street. The suspect worked on the ignition next, and final ly drove away with the van. Inside the vehicle were a variety of hand and power tools that included drills, saws, and nail guns. The brand names included Bosch, Makita, and Delta. The van was found abandoned in Hamilton, but all of the tools are still missing. The tools were esti- and employees reported suspicious per sons and vehicles. Citizen-based crime fighting committees issued warnings in newsletters. The media published warn ings in local newspapers and police conducted surveillance in cemeteries. Police officers also spoke to visitors, advising them to lock valuables in their trunks. The deputy chief said whether the service ends up winning or losing, being in the top 25 is already an honour. "It's a prestigious award," he said. "We're very happy about it." He said the service won't know the final results until August. The award program is open to all law enforcement agencies worldwide with the exception of private corpora tions and individuals. Agencies both large and small have an equal chance of winning, according to the rules.
