ROXUL The Rattar Insulatinn By Steve LeBlanc CANADIAN CHAMPION STAFF Retirement can be an exciting time â€" one with less stress and newfound freedom. But what happens when you‘ve got all the time in the world and nobody to share it with? "Some people can become isolated and reâ€" treat from social activity when they retire, especially if iliness is a facâ€" tor or their spouse is gone," noted Joanne Millichamp, founder of the Escarpment Probus Club, an allâ€"enâ€" compassing social group for retired and semiâ€"retired people. "One of the things that makes life successful is being with other people." Millichamp â€" a former personnel manager with the Hudson Bay Comâ€" pany â€" is among those striving to connect retirees through one of the two local Probus clubs. The concept for Probus â€" taking its moniker from the words professional and business â€" originated in Cambridge about 30 years ago and has snowballed to include 250 clubs across Canada, with March now designated as National Probus Month. Moving to town about fiveâ€"andâ€"aâ€"half years ago with husband Ron, who owned his own marketing company, Millichamp first sought to join the alreadyâ€"established Probus Club of Milton. But with the club at capacity and its organizers choosing not to grow its ranks for fear of losing some of the comfort and faâ€" miliarity among its membership, the former Oakville Probus Club member was only ofâ€" fered a spot on the waiting list. "I was told I should start a new club because I‘d had some experience," recalled Millichamp, who credited her husband and Jeanne Reid with providing a lot of support in establishâ€" ing the Escarpment Probus Club. "We got a Joanne Millichamp startâ€"up loan from the Rotary Club of $500 and were expecting 30 to 40 people at the first meeting. We wound up with 98, which shocked me. Eightyâ€"six people signed up." Fast forward a few years, and Escarpment Proâ€" bus has more than 200 members and about 25 different groups â€" everything from card games and golfing to hiking and wine tasting. "It‘s a chance to get out, meet peoâ€" ple and do activities that interest you," said Millichamp, an avid reader and gardener. The club has a wide variety of speakâ€" ers at its monthly meetings â€" now held at Memorial Arena‘s Lions Hall the third Wednesday of the month â€" and has even established a travel group, with recent trips to Ireland and Poland and one set for the fall to Austria. "I think that‘s one of the things that shows the success of our club," said Milâ€" lichamp, referring to the fact that people have to be awfully comfortable with one another in order to venture overseas together. "We try to be as welcoming as possible... really be hosâ€" pitable." Escarpment Probus is set to mark National Probus Month at its Wednesday, March 15 meeting. Mayor Gord Krantz will attend the 9:30 a.m. event â€" open to newcomers, whether retired or approaching retirement â€" which will feature a talk on elder care. "Some people are in a number of different groups, while some are just into say card games or just attend our meetings. We have some fascinating speakers," said Millichamp, who noted that new members are always welâ€" come. "There‘s a lot to keep one occupied. Our motto is Live, Laugh, Learn. I think that pretty well sums it up."
