MFD officials said these recent fires had one common item: they were using a stem or column style of sump pump. However, the submersible style of pump was not a factor in any recent incidents. The majority of sump pump fires were also caused by homeowner/ocâ€" cupant error, such as keeping comâ€" bustible materials near the pump. These two incidents are just a small sample representative of the increasâ€" ing numbers of fire calls originating due to a sump pump issue over the past few years, MFD noted. As a result, the MFD wants to enâ€" sure residents are well informed on how to prevent sump fires. It recâ€" ommends choosing a submersible pump as a safer alternative instead of a stem or column style of pump, keeping the area around the pump free of all combustibles, ensuring supply pipes to the pump are clear of clogs; the pit should be free of debris and the pump should kick on and off as intended, checking sump pumps before it rains, at least once in the fall and once in the spring and keeping submersible pumps level and colâ€" umn/stem pumps vertical. If there is any suspicion of malfuncâ€" tion with your sump pump, the Milâ€" ton Fire Department recommends homeowners call a professional for an inspection.
