Wednesdsay August 18, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A5 M em ories frozen in tim e I can't quite decide which of these large format old black and white photographs lying on our back table is my favourite. Their edges are tom, a little rumpled and a few of them have seen bet ter days. Well, so have we all. Still, they stand not only as snapshots of Toronto's history: they are now part of mine. My great grandfather, by all accounts an avid photographer, must have spent a great deal of time roaming about the Toronto in the late 1930s and early 1940s: all five of these pho tographs were taken in the downtown area as well as the Toronto Islands. Each one offers a glimpse into an era by now long gone. Years ago, the photos were given to me and I've carried them from place to place, never finding the right spot, always hoping to frame them and dis play them when the right room came along. This sounds as though there has been a plan when really I just schlepped them all with me. But in our back room, there is a wall that cries out for these wonderful shots of Toronto in the 1940s: at long last I am finally giving them a proper home. As I look at them again I not only wonder about the Toronto that he captured at the start of the war, I begin to wonder a lit tle about the man behind the DIANE HART camera. He obviously had an eye. In the first of the series, the shade of a large tree dominates the early morning scene at the Toronto Islands. My great aunt tells me her father entered the Toronto photos for a contest and a few months later the family travelled downtown to see them exhibited at the art gallery. It's funny to think the same photos that were on the walls at the art gallery are now going to be on our own walls. How proud he must have been to have his work exhibited in such a way. On the back of each photo graph he'd scrawled the location and date. The one taken at Centre Island in 1940 shows an empty boardwalk in the early morning. Standing in front of such an idyllic, serene scene, it's hard not to be charmed. The board walk looks just like it does today, minus the amusement park and the in-line skaters. Just the trees and the boardwalk and a photographer who just hap pened to be good enough to appreciate it. He also had a great eye for urban scenes: The second large format photograph is taken from below a large building rising up towards the burgeoning city, statuesque. Its title? Almost with a satirical wink to the viewer, my great grandfather scrawled: "Prodigious King Street", with the date July 1940. How prodi gious could King Street have been back then? And what would this man have thought of all the other buildings built since then....the controversial black boxes, the CN Tower, the Air Canada hangar. Imagine where his eye would fall today. The only photo, interestingly, that is in any way a portrait is the one "Sunnyside at Night" where a Frank Sinatra lookalike is bowling. But he isn't looking at the camera; he's busy in the alley. The perspective, again, is an intriguing one. I suppose, though, if I had to choose one as a favourite it would be the one night scene again on the Toronto Islands. It's August 14, 1940, a clear evening at Hanlon's Point and there is a stage packed with singing children. The girls are all wearing pret ty party dresses and the boys are in good shorts and shirts. Not a skateboarder to be seen for miles. (S e e 'P h o to s ' p a g e 8 ) ' .
