The trail, which commemorates the Oakville Olympian's achievements, features several attractions. They include Tannery Park, site of Oakville's first brewery, which now features a, rock cairn honouring the HMCS Oakville which sank a German U-boat during World War II. The Waterfront Regeneration Trust was created by the Ontario government in 1992. This body is custodian of the Waterfront Regeneration Fund. In April, the Waterfront Regeneration Trust evolved from a provincial agency into an independent non-profit organi zation. Two years ago, CIBC entered into a $1 million partnership, adding its finan cial weight to the various levels of gov ernment, conservation authorities, ser vice clubs and community groups which are responding to the opportuni ties offered by the trail. "At CIBC, we are strong supporters of the communities where we work and live," says Bonnie Flynn, CIBC vice president for branch banking, Greater Toronto Area. "We believe that our partnership with the Waterfront Regeneration Trust is an important aspect of our commitment to communi ty development." Waterfront Regeneration Trust chair David Crombie agrees: "Our partners have been instrumental in the Trust's success and we are particularly grateful to the CIBC. They have demonstrated their leadership by supporting our work to revitalize Lake Ontario communi ties." Those wishing more information about the Trust can call 416-943-8080 or visit its website at www.waterfront- trail.org. Upgrades to systems should work (C o n tin u e d from p a g e 1 )_ and the appropriate agency (police, fire, ambulance) is notified. The telephone system used is a Nortel Meridian 1 Option 61. Nortel has confirmed that this system and its related software is Y2K compliant. Several Region-owned components of the 911 system are currently being tested for compliance but the Region assures residents these will not affect the provision of emergency services. Upgrades to all 12 of the Region's water and wastewater treatment plants have been identified and are underway and are scheduled for completion by September. Plans to operate equipment without computer assistance in event of a Y2K system failure are also currently being developed. There is also adequate back-up power to meet essential demands for water in case of an extended (more than one day) power outage. The wastewater system also has adequate back-up power and capacity to run effectively during short or intermittent power out ages. An assessment of systems and equipment at Allendale, the Region's long-term care facility, has also been completed. A communications plan has been developed and emergency stand by generators have been tested. The status of critical suppliers and the education of Allendale staff are ongoing. Contingency plans for every critical function are being formulated to ensure the basic needs of Allendale res idents are met in a safe and caring man ner. Staff and families are being made knowledgeable and prepared for the possible impact of operating under con tingency conditions.
