Then, after marriage and kids, came a teaching position at the prestigious Quinte ballet school in Belleville, where she taught ballet for 18 years. "Students graduate from professional ballet schools (like Quinte, the NBS, etc.) into compa nies... So a lot of my (former) stu dents are dancing for professional companies - at the National Ballet, the Royal Winnipeg, the Paris Opera, the Royal Ballet School...That's the .difference between a professional and a recreational school, I guess," she says, explaining that all Oakville's ballet schools, including her own, are recreational. "I recommend students go on to professional ballet schools, to audition. O f course, they have to be accepted, but the doors are open to them to get that kind of experi ence." Her partner, Marques, has been dancing since age six, beginning with ballet training and moving on to modern dance at an early age. "Mod ern is basically a form of ballet, a mixture of jazz movement inter twined with ballet training. It was very creative and that's something that I like to be," she says, adding that her teaching career began at age 16 in Mississauga and has continued into Oakville. "Then I started getting calls forjudging, and I've judged throughout Canada and the U. S. in modern, jazz, ballet, tap." And she teaches all those disci plines as well. She was also choreographer for the Junior Miss Dance in 1993 and Petite Miss Dance in 1999. Also, this year, one of her students, Jeanine Dinger, (now age 11) competed in the Petite Miss Dance of America, #43, and placed in the top 10. Both directors are dance instruc tors who regularly update their knowledge by taking as well as con ducting workshops. And they expose their students to a variety of work shops offered by outside choreogra phers, introducing them to different styles and techniques. "If they go on to a dance career after, they have to learn how to adapt quickly to different styles quickly," says Nicholson. "So by sending them out, you're giving them exposure to what's out there." "It helps them develop a concentration and a focus, self-esteem, confidence, co ordination, dedication. And they start young." Marques agrees, adding that most children take lessons because they enjoy dancing. But, along with the pleasure of dancing, the children pick up all the attributes that Nicholson mentioned, as well as an appreciation for the art. Consequently, the two directors emphasize the recreational portion of their program - making sure those kids who attend classes every week enjoy their hour or so at the studio; but they do this with an eye to com petitions - selecting the students who choose to take more than one class per week and hone their skills. "The competitive schedule is very hectic," says Nicholson, adding that students who compete usually chose to take their dance examinations as well. "Normally they would do five competitions, and on the off year they would do a national or interna tional competition - often in the (United) States," adds Marques, explaining that students she taught at her former studio have won many awards for modern dance. "One of my groups won a television show in Ocean City, Maryland. They won top Junior Group. That was a big event and it was really fun taping the tele vision show, although it was a 15- hour day for the kids...I had three groups in the finals, and one group won." Both owners will put their years of experience in dance to work at their new studio. Nicholson has been on her toes since age nine and by age 11 she had already graduated to the National Ballet School (NBS) where she stayed, past graduation. "I stayed an extra year and took a specials course for people like myself who were undecided as to what they wanted to do. Actually, dancing is already going on at the studio in the form of sum mer camps, which had to be extended an extra week due to their popularity. But that won't interfere with registra tion for fall classes, which begin on Friday. The studio, owned and operated by directors/instructors Sandra Nicholson and Carla Marques, has been newly renovated with freshly painted blue walls and shiny, new sprung floors. Nicholson and Marques stress three things when they describe their new venture - that their students have fun when they take dance lessons, that they learn to appreciate dance as an art form, and that those who want to compete have the oppor tunity to do so. The two directors believe that encouraging their charges to partici pate in dance competitions offers them an opportunity to perform, especially to students who do not plan to pursue a career in dancing. "Ninety-nine-point-nine per cent of these kids will never get the chance to perform, so competition for them is great...These are recreational dancers with the hours of a profes sional, basically.
