Summerfest happens this weekend The Killin' Jive is coming to Summerfest. This six-member group known for its swing, jump blues and boogie promis­ es to be an entertaining addition to this year's festivities in Glen Abbey on Aug. 20th to 22nd. All the fun happens at Nottinghill Park, Nottinghill Gate and Pilgrim's Way, starting Friday at 6 p.m. and concluding Sunday at 6 p.m. Admission is free. The Killing Jive will be on stage Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. for Jazz in the Park at the Bavarian Garden. Expect swing from the 1930s to the 1950s, including music from Cab Galloway, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and Simon Crum. A ready mix of chaos and fedoras, the instruments The Killin' Jive play include lap steel guitar to tenor sax, 'saw and straw boater', skins and sticks, ivories, spark jiver and doghouse bass. Summerfest, which has grown into Oakville's largest three-day festival north of the Queen Elizabeth Way, began as a one- day family fun day 15 years ago organized by GARA - the Glen Abbey Residents Association. It is also Oakville's longest running festival. The Children's Stage Show, on Sunday at 2:30 p.m., will feature juggler Madame Buskerfly - Summerfest's master of cere­ monies. The Mad Scientists invade Nottinghill Park following Madame Buskerfly's jug­ gling act, for an interactive scientific demonstration followed by a hands-on activity in a tent. The Summerfest fun begins Friday with the Teddy Bear Slumber Party for the kids at 7 p.m. Children are encouraged to wear their pajamas and bring a teddy bear, or favorite stuffed toy, and enjoy Mary Lambert's Family Fun Concert. Lambert, a children's entertainer and mother of three from Kingston, Ont., is known for her lively concerts that starts chil- Madame Buskerfly dren dancing. Teens will enjoy the return of the Much Music Video Dance Party, on Friday 9 to 11:30 p.m., at the baseball diamond. New Hollywood, a band making itself known in the Toronto club scene, is on stage for Rockin' in the Park on Friday night in the Bavarian Garden starting at 8:30 p.m. This five-member band is gaining a reputa­ tion for its hot mix of music and incredible stage presence - complete with dancing. Festivities begin early Saturday morning with the annual 5K Run starting at 8:30 a.m. New this year is the Children's Craft Tent run by the Oakville Parent Child Centre on Saturday The first ever Summerfest Lip Sync Contest happens Saturday at 5 p. m. Age cat­ egories for the competition are 6 to 8, 9 to 11, 12 to 14, and other. Entries will be judged on singing and costumes. Deadline for entries is Aug 19th, call Sylvia Verdenhalven at 849-3356. Another new event is the Saturday night DJ Spin-off Contest at the baseball diamond at 8 p.m. The popular Dancing Under the Stars returns Saturday night to the Bavarian Garden with Audiofile Disk Jockey Services playing requests. The second annual Photo Contest, to be judged Sunday at 1 p.m., proved successful last year with over 40 entries. Photos taken since Jan. 1, 1998, of any subject; or at any previous Summerfest, can be entered. Entries, not larger than '8x10', preferably '4x6' - complete with name, address, sub­ ject and location, and date taken, must be delivered to Sylvia Verdenhalven at work, Royal LePage, 251 North Service Rd. west ofDorval, or at home, 1221 Rosethome Rd., by Aug. 19th, 10 p.m. All photographs must be taken by Oakville residents. The sixth annual Summerfest Fruit Pie Baking Contest will also be judged Sunday at 1 p.m. Pies, not more than two per entrant, must be brought to the Bavarian Garden on Sunday between 12:30 and 12:55 p.m., in disposable pie plates. The pies will be sold by the slice after the judging. Entries must be at least 7 inches in diameter, and have a double crust or lattice top - and be filled with fruit. For information, call Sylvia Verdenhalven at 849-3356. Happyland Shows returns with its mid­ way of games and rides including the Dragon Wagon Roller Coaster. Nobody will go hungry at Summerfest. Saturday's dinner will feature a Com Roast by the Oakville North Rotary Club which will be selling waffles and ice cream all weekend. Food vendors will include 'Hamburger Heaven' courtesy of Glen Abbey United Church - and Grace Chapel. Saturday's pan­ cake breakfast will be provided by the Oakville Kinsmen Club.
