Defeating Lake Shore 1+â€"0 in a dramâ€" atlic climax to a fiveâ€"game series at Mcâ€" Intyre Stadium last night, Porcupine Miners won the senior Temiskaming Baseball League and the right to proceed against Smith‘s Falls for the FEastrrn Ontario title. It was the third straight win for Daminic Senese, who literally rightâ€"handed the Porkies into the league honors. Porâ€" cupine dropped the first game in Kirkâ€" land Lake 14â€"5, won the second 3â€"1 with Senese on the hilltop and the third 2â€"0 behind the same pitching in South Porcupine. Bill Meade alâ€" lowed only four hits to five by Buck on Tuesday but lost out 3â€"1, while last night Senes> returned again to beat Lefty Weeks in a memorable pitcher‘s battle, 1â€"0. Porcupine won the game in the sixth inninz on three errors, sacrifice and a fielder‘s choice. "Wink" Dowling, who has been one of the main cogs in the Porcupine machine during the enâ€" tire series, went to first on Forster‘s error and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Dominas. Weeks made an attempt toa nip him off second and Durâ€" nan fumbled the ball. Porster recoverâ€" ed and made a poor throw to third, Dowling pulling up safe. Labag drove a hard ball to Durnan at short and Dowling scored from third when Brenâ€" nan, Lake Shore catcher, dropped the standing ready to catch the, ball when Shalley crashed into him. The Lake Shore player dropped to the, ground in a daz> ¢xclut two feet from the plate. Schu‘tz mcecovered the ball and tossed to Senese who tagged the Lake Shore man as his teammates tried to drag his prostrate body over the plate. Dan Howley, business manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs baseball team, was among the spectators at the gameé and was accompanied by George Quinn. Ostensibly they came to the Porcupine to look over the mines but, according to the grapevine there might have been a little scouting thrown in also. In any event Howley, one of the most prominent luminaries in the Inâ€" ternational League baseball firmament, Both pitchers allowed only five scatâ€" tered hits, Senese striking out eight and Weeks nine. The game was playâ€" ed before a crowd of well over 1,500 fans. a hard Dowling nan, La ball. Stoyond, batting for Scruton, who had struck out in each of three previous trips to the plate, beat out an infield hit along third base line despite a perâ€" fect pickâ€"up and peg by Dowling. Catâ€" arello fumbled May‘s drive to second base and both runners were safe. Senâ€" ese really bore down from this point on and the fans took another breath when he fanned the hard hitting Bill Durnan for the first out. Forster was out to Long at first unassisted, but the two men on base advanced to second and third. With the tieing and winâ€" ning run in scoring position, Shalley poked a hard drive to short. Abhbie Moreau, one of the gamest and scrapâ€" pisst players in the circuit, gathered in the ball and retired the side with a perfect throw to first base . which brought the leagiue title to Porcupine. Lake Shore are by no means to be forgotten when the orchids are being handed out. They have a great ball club and might just as easily have won out,. They would make worthy opponâ€" ents for any senior team and were right in the contention until the last man was out. While Senese was a standout ail the way through the playâ€"offs, it was not without the excellent backing of a fighting, game and courageous team that he was successful. Every man on the ciwb deserves a part of the glory and when last night‘s game was over a wildly acclaiming crowd literally wrung their arms off with congratulaâ€" tions and best wishes on their quest for the FEastern Ontario champion- ship. At the meeting’ there were representatives from Sudâ€" bury, Sault Ste, Marie, Chapleau and | North Bay golf clubs. The chief argueâ€" ment was that the Northern â€"Ontario Golf Association was becoming too largse and representing too extended a territory. For this reason it was diffiâ€" | cult to hold representative meetings,| tournaments, etc., and to keep in propâ€"| er touch with the golfers in the widely separated parts of the territory repreâ€" sented. It was argued that a southern | association would meet the situationl more effectively than under the present plan. This is not the first time the question has been discussed, nor is it likely to be the last. A great many golfers believe that the formation of a souths:rn association for this North is inevitable in the future on account of the immense territory concerned. Wheâ€" l ther the present is the best time to mak»e the change is another matter for argument. Of course, the discussion at Surbury last week did not result in any decision being reached. It was agreed, however, that the discussion on the matter should be continiuw=d next yeari at the invitation tournament at Soult Ste. Marie, and also at the annual meeting of the Northern Ontario Golf Association to be held at North Bay. Big Bill Durnan then slashed outa long single to centre that scored Bcuk and Stoyond. Durnan was left stranded as Forster went out at first. Don Price, out of the first game here with a knee injury, was back in the game Tuesday, and though his hitting wasn‘t nearly as effective as usual, his fielding was a big factor in Lake Shore‘s win. Scrutton mad> some senâ€" sational catches in the outfield too. Labag drew a walk in the Porcupine cnd of the first inning and advanced to second on May‘s bad handling of Schultz‘s drive to third. In the seventh Douzg May, first man up bunted and went to second on Meade‘s bad throw to first. Shalley walked and Brennan sacrificed both men along. Price was batting when Lake Shore decided to try a squeez> and it was perfect. Buck was hit by Meade and it looked like the setâ€"up for another couple of runs, but Scrutton, next man up, flisd to deep right to end the inninge. It was Buck himself that paved the way to victory after the Porcupine team had taken a cneâ€"run lead in the first canto. His smashing single to centre in the sixth inning and his perfect base running put him in a scoring position and big Bill Durnan took care of the rest of it. Buck had eight strikeouts to his credit, and thouzh he did waiver a bit in the last inning, a smart double killing pulled him out of a big hole. hand, tock advantage of all the breaks and coupled with Buck‘s perfect base stealing, scored enough runs to win the game in very short order.
